13 years of school done. What happens next?

Okay, later tonight (in about 3-4 hours) I'll receive my high school diploma, proving 13 years of hard work and acquiring unbelievable amounts of useless information. Its been a roller-coaster ride of highs and lows. The joy and carelessness of elementary school, the awkward phase at middle school and three years of happiness at high school.
Just to clear things up, the education system in Norway is a bit different from that in the States.

Elementary school span the grades 1 through 7 (age 6-13)
Middle School, or Junior High span the grades 8-9-10 (age 14-16)
And finally, High School, grades 11 through 13 (age 17-19)

Anyways. That is all over and done with. Now, what will I do next? Luckily I have all my plans laid out for at least the next six years.
In August this year, right after the summer vacation I'm joining the army. Here we have a somewhat optional service period that lasts about a year or so. Approximately  4 out of 10 males between 18-20 years get drafted for service, If you don't want to serve, it's really easy to get out. But I do want to serve, as it will give me a much needed break from school and education.

After my year in the armed forces I will begin my bachelor-degree in journalism at a college in Oslo, this will be three very interesting years, as journalism has fascinated me for years. After receiving my degree I will take a break, before completing the education with a Masters-degree. During this break i really want to travel, you know, see the world. I've traveled quite a lot, but never for long periods of time. I want to go on a cross-country road trip through the States, or backpacking through Europe.
Unfortunately this probably won't happen in the near future. As a student, my economy will be in ruins and I'll have to work to save up money, but someday, I promise you, it will happen.

I want to get my Masters-degree abroad, in either Australia or England. Along side the excitement of living in another country, it will provide experience that might be useful when applying for a job. Hopefully I will end up in gaming journalism, as this obviously is a part of my life. The ideal situation is that I stay in this business until i retire, but I can't really see that happening.

Anyways, just wanted to share my thoughts on the future with the fine members of this site, and also ask this question.
What are your plans for the future? Or, for those of you who might be a bit older. Did your plans turn out the way you wanted?

@RiotBananas: Whats wrong with that?
Anyways....

@Mrskidders: I thought a lot about becoming a chef, I've always enjoyed cooking, but after talking to a friend of mine who is a chef, it didn't seem too much fun doing it professionally. It sounded very stressful.
I still cook most of my meals myself, and that skill sure helps with the ladies ;)

@VIGGO123: It is hard but you really reap the rewards when you start getting to the higher levels.  Also, you can be a chef anywhere in the world.  The language might be different but it often isn't a problem.  I have worked in Vietnam, Thailand, China and many other places and with a lot of pointing and shouting you can get by!  Cooking has got me laid for years now, it's the only reason I stuck at it at first to be honest.

@VIGGO123:
Well my plans were thought up by my X which was to go to Uni and then go live with her and hopefully get a job in her area, I didn't want to go to Uni but I did it for her but once she left I just don't care for Uni at all, well I guess my plans haven't 100% failed but it's more of the reason behind the plans are gone so I just don't want to do Uni anymore although I did just finish second year but finding a placement for third year is proving to be impossible.

Army sounds like a pretty good plan. I just finished my freshman year of college, and now I'm probably going to take a year off, and I'm really wishing I'd done that last year instead of doing one year of college and then dropping out for a year...could be tough getting back in.

Sounds like a good plan, only thing I can suggest is trying to get your degree and serve in the military at the same time (ROTC an option?).

Just remember to be prepared for when things don't work out the way you planned.

I switched majors in college to one that I absolutely loved. Had an idea of what type of job I wanted and everything, and had some decent job interviews during my senior year. Didn't get the jobs, but knew there were other jobs out there. Then the economy tanked right as I was graduating. I've been unemployed a year now and counting.

@Jared: For some of the more common degrees there is an option to take it during your service, but journalism isn't one of them. Instead, the military has a certain number of reserved spots at every major university in Norway. If I apply through them, it will probably be much easier to get in, considering i would need all six's  (straight A's) if I applied normally.

also the plans you have when leaving high school will likely be chewed up and shit out multiple times by this thing called real life.  personally my path after high school went all over, thankfully 4-5 years later i have a career i never thought i'd have in my life when i was in high school and i love it.

I just finished high school and got in to a pretty prestigious journalism school (Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication at ASU Downtown), and once I get my degree get a job in journalism. I'm nervous about the whole thing since the industry is changing so much right now. I'm betting that it'll settle down a lot by the time I get out of college and I can find a job at either a sports site, a tech site (like Engadget or Gizmodo) or gaming (Giant Bomb, Joystiq, Kotaku, etc.).

Hopefully.

My plan is to create the robot army that destroys the world.  I figure someone is going to do it anyway, so why not me.

This thread is a bit depressing. Seems that no one is getting what they really want.

As for me, I'm doing nothing. I graduated in '09 and haven't done much since. I'm thinking about applying at a gas station...

Right now it is completely volunteer-based. But, all males 18-25 must register for something called Selective Service, just in case there a comes a time when a draft is needed.
