I'm F'ING annoyed!

I am fucking annoyed with the state of gaming these days. As the Giant Bomb Crew pointed out in their GOTY podcast this year is filled with sequels, and out of all of those, I might be able to pick out two or three I would actually recommend to anybody. Take CoD:MW3 for example, The game is pretty much the same as MW2, "story" progression aside, it offers nothing new to the series. The same goes for Assassins Creed: Revelations, the only "new" thing it introduces is a shitty implementation of the tower defense genera, had it not been for my investment in the stoy, I'd probably never play that game.¨

The core of this problem is the annualized series we are fooled into buying over and over again. The annualizing of games has been a norm when it comes to sports games, but recently it has started appearing in other genres as well, be it driving games, or the Call of Duty series, I mean, Activision has Four studios dedicated to development of CoD games. Give me a fucking break! How long will this go on?

But who's fault is it really, I'll tell you. It is our fault. Us, the consumers, thr gamers. Especially the so called Casual Gamers, the ones thinking "That last Call of Duty gmae was pretty good, I should probably buy this next one." It is your fault, please stop it!

Anyways, rant over!

I am going to sleep now, will review this in the morning and probably delete it. Had a heated argument (after a few beers) with some freinds of mine about the state of the gaming industry, and I jst had to get tihis of my chest.

GOOD NIGHT EVERYONE ON THE INTERWEBS

SEE YOU TOMORROW!

EDIT: Wow, just read through this after sobering up, and while he has serious trouble with his writing, drunk me does make some fair points.

Yes, I really enjoyed Call of Duty: 4, it was probably the game I spent the most time on that year. When MW2 came out it was basically the same, with a story on steroids, and then they did the same fucking thing with MW3. Let me paint you a mental picture. Imagine your favorite meal, a juicy steak with baked potatoes on the side for example. You really enjoy this meal, but what if you had to eat only that for an entire month. I bet that steak wouldn't be as good on the 28th day.

My point is, repetition is boring, that is why MMOs never worked for me.

And I am not saying innovation always trumps the tried and true, but where would this industry be if no one tried to innovate? We wouldn't have gems like Portal, Company of Heroes or Saints Row. In fact, without innovation, our whole scientific progression would grind to a halt.

You say that as though I haven't been there before. I have. I've eaten an entire pizza in one sitting numerous times before. Guess what? I still like pizza. Never once have I said, "Pizza? Again? FUCKING BULLSHIT!" This includes the act of eating the entire pizza itself. The last slice is just as good as the first, and the slices in the middle the same. Repetition is not boring if the thing being repeated is good in the first place. It's impossible for something to be less than AND equal to something else.

I don't know where it would be, but as long as the games in that hypothetical world would still be good, I wouldn't really give a shit. Again, why should I give a shit about originality if a game is good?

THOSE ARE NOT INNOVATIVE GAMES. Portal is a rip-off of Narbacular Drop; Saints Row is essentially Grand Theft Auto with a different coat of paint; and while I have not played Company of Heroes, I have seen that it is very easily placed in the real time strategy genre, meaning it must borrow from other real time strategy games (otherwise, it wouldn't be an RTS), meaning it borrows from other games, meaning it is not original. Notice how I didn't insult the quality of those games, as they can still be good without a shred of originality. Innovation is not good, damn it. It can't even be placed on the spectrum of good and bad.

I think that's all I can say on the subject for now without beginning to sound like an idiot.

That will only lead to him complaining about how Rayman has sequels every year. This ideology is a no-win situation.

You are fully entitled to your own opinions, but I can't help but disagree with you. It is true that Portal is based on the student project Narbacular Drop. Valve saw the potential in the project and took the developers under it's wing to perfect it and released it as Portal. And Company of Heroes is known for revolutionizing the RTS-genera, The way they moved the focus away from base building and resource management, to a more compact and tactical experience gave the genera a much needed breath of life.

If everyone just copies each other, the market will eventually get tired and we will face another collapse like the one in '83

But hey, let's just agree to disagree :)

EDIT: Since when did Rayman turn into an annualized series. Some developers do still have integrity you know...

Yeah casual gamers, stop doing something you enjoy so the rest of us can go back to time of rainbows and unicorns that was super duper awesome that only existed before CoD4 was released.

But it still had a buttload of sequels. Every generation has a buttload of sequels, and this one is no exception.

So, drunk me makes some fair points, but he doesn't formulate them very well. There have been some great sequels this year, like Dead Space 2, Portal 2 and Saints Row: The Third. And it's been a lot of really good indie games coming out.

I take issue with the way games are being churned out for profit, and loosing all passion and innovation in the process. Especially I really dislike the way Activision is handling their IP's. When they find a formula that works, they stick with it and milk it for all its worth. And it pains me to see this tendency spread to other publishers as well, as EA did with Dragon Age II and like Ubisoft is doing with Assassins Creed.

And finally, in reply to @Video_Game_King:

I don't demand originality from every game I play. I am well aware of the fact that almost every game borrows elements from something that exists already. But using an idea as a base for building upon is not the same as releasing three copy pasted games in a row! When you build an entire collection of developers who's sole purpose is making this ONE game over and over again you're taking it too far. Take a look at MW3, five different studios made that game!

But I guess that is the way it has to be done when your schedule demands another one every year, because your only thought is making as much money as possible, instead of actually taking a risk at something that will bring innovation to the industry.

So much better thought out than your original post. Now I can just say that I agree with you, instead of being a condescending dick.
