I can understand how this game was incredible at the time, but I think even that isn't an excuse for the shoddy plot and cardboard-cutout characters. There's just no uniqueness to anything going on, aside from the set dressing. Unless Shenmue 2 does a particularly stellar job of humanizing the cast and giving some gravity to the situation, this entire series is just the melodrama of Dragon Ball Z mixed with a visual novel in terms of progression.

Yeah but that little cat represents Ryo because they're alone because their parents died the same day LOOK AT THE CAT!

Tolstoï's War and Peace covers, in four parts, the many Russian dynasties of the period, the invasion of Russia by Napoleon and a reflexion on the concept of history itself. Dostoïevski's The Idiot, again in four parts, analyses the place of innocence and good nature in an aristocracy that rejects both. Balzac, through his entire Comédie humaine, constructs an full and precise portrait of life in France in the XIXe century and its inhabitants.

When it will be completed, Shenmue will have wasted its eleven chapter story, four-or-five games series, on this dipshit's hero journey and mini-game collection, a most tedious soap opera staring a man with the physique of a refrigerator and the personality of one too.

As someone who's never touched it, I'm starting to think playing Shenmue now is a lot like watching an old silent movie or even something like Kurosawa's Seven Samurai. If you don't have reverence for the historical context, for what it was able to accomplish in its day, it's just got nothing going for it in 2016. Sure, the controls seem like ass and no amount of nostalgic hand waving really excuses that, but the things we take for granted now (an open world, NPCs going about and having a set routine, quick time events, etc) seem like they would be very technically impressive back then, much like you might miss the fact that Seven Samurai was one of the first movies (if not the first) to show a bit of backstory for our heroes before the gather together to set out on their journey, something that's practically ubiquitous now.

Because this game seems terrible, and I have to assume that the people who actually love this mess are coming from a place that's impossible to understand in 2016.

Please, do not compare Shenmue to one of the greatest films of all time. This movie is still visually striking and emotionally resonant 60 years after it came out. Same goes for silent films made by Fritz Lang, Carl Theodor Dreyer, F. W. Murnau, Georges Mélies, Dziga Vertov, Sergei Eisenstein, Charlie Chaplin, Buster Keaton, D.W. Griffith and many, many more.
