No More Naked Men

i'm not going to tell you any spoilers, I'm not going to give you my complete opinion, I'm just gonna let you know a few things about this Watchmen movie.
If you've never read the graphic novel, it's too late to start. You're going to watch it, and you're going to be corrupted by the movie version first, just as I was corrupted by the graphic novel. So, that said, here we go:

Best CGI: Dr. Manhatten. They got his glowy skin deal going on pretty accurately
Worst CGI: Bubastis. I mean, a snow leopard with deer antlers would've been more believable.

Best Sticking to the plot element: The characters. Absolutely spot on. Dan's still a wimp, Rorschack scares the poop out of me, and the Comedian, actually if anything, improved.
Worst Sticking to the plot element: Everything after the sex scene.

My favorite moment: Rorschack's "Never compromise" speech
My least favorite moment: Everything after the sex scene.

So yeah, I haven't wanted to walk out of a theater in a long time, so that was a cool experience. I loved that it stuck to the time period. I loved that the comedic element was expounded upon to make its point about human nature. I hated that the point came at the price of a rather ridiculous film.

Also, There's a lot of penises. It came to the point that a guy in front of us shouted "NO MORE NAKED MEN". Which gained a round of applause from the audience.
Okay. That's my review.

I hope you read the graphic novel.

I've not read the graphic novel, although I have heard great things about it. I'm tempted to pick up a copy, when I have money again. Not sure about the film, though...

This makes it sound like there are penises in the film just for the sake of having penises in the film. Is this the case? Is it overly gratuitous with penis-screen-time? Does it (forgive the expression) thrust them in your face? If so, this is something I would probably feel very uncomfortable watching. Like, Brokeback Mountain levels of discomfort.

Dr Manhatten does not wear any clothes, he loathes to wear them actually because for him they have no more meaning. Havn't seen it yet so i cant comment about penis screen time but him being nude is more to show how he has become distant from the human world and not for the "lolz".

The title of your post tripped me out. With GTA IV: The Lost and Damned having full frontal "naked man", I thought I would throw up a youtube clip with an old band I liked in the 80's, one of the guys played naked, in my blog. It did not go over well, so I took it down. No more naked men for me either, I guess it's been played out.

Wut. The only penis was Dr Manhattan's. There was a lot of Dan's butt, but whatever, all that stuff was in the comic, and the guy shouting sounds like a prude, stereotypical "I AINT NO FAG" idiot.

The movie was good. It could have been so much worse. But it wasn't as good as the book, obviously, as it's far too dense to all be put in one movie.

Ah, too bad you (somewhat) decided to no show your opinion. I was curious to see what someone that knows it's only an adaptation would think.

I don't know if I'll watch it or not. The thing is, I most definitly will hate it. I know it's stupid to form an opinion before watching the movie, but it's an adaptation of something that should've never have been adapted. No matter how good it turns out to be, it'll always be worse than the graphic novel.

On the other hand I HAVE to watch it. Within two days I'll start hearing from people it's the best movie they've ever seen, and I HAVE to be able to argue against that.

I'm really torn apart.

zitosilva, you should see it. It's far from terrible and mostly faithful. I've heard some musings from like, super buffs that it betrays some of the comic's most important themes towards the end, but I think the message comes across, and I wasn't offended by it. Like I said, the book is better, but as long as you go in knowing that, and not intent on nit-picking every little difference, you'll be fine. Worth seeing.

On the nudity scale

Boobs < penises. Genetalia always takes precident over topless women. Boobs have been done to death. Now the "bottomless party" scene on "Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay"....that's something I can deal with :)

I think it's not a huge deal. What they replaced it with, story-wise, has the exact same effect. They basically exchanged it for something identical. Like I said, the message is the same.

Yeah, dude... I don't know about this movie. I was finally starting to get interested in it, but with all the male nudity, maybe I'm better off just waiting until it's severely edited on TV someday.

I haven't seen the film, but I assume Carla Gugino bared some during the rape scene with the Comedian?

I only say this because she went topless in Sin City, so she's not averse to doing that sort of thing.

It a glowing blue CG cock, no reason not to see it just because of that.

That was the one thing that had me worried, looking forward to seeing it (if ever i stumble on a cinema where it is in English...)

I hope it's not like full-on rape. Because from what I remember in the book, she was never actually raped, but they got close before 'dude with black bag for mask' came in.

Malin Akerman (Silk Spectre) gets it on with Patrick Wilson (Nite Owl) in Archie.  So yes.  It reminded me a bit too much of the sex scene in 300, though...but that's okay.  Whatever.  She's still smoking fucking hot, and for an R rated movie, it was damn near softcore porn.  The amount of sex, blood, and violence in this movie really surprised me for a theatre release...which is a GOOD thing given the source material.

As for the amount of dong...whatever.  There was just as much dick in the graphic novel, so I don't see what everyone's problem is.  Snyder could've been a pussy and had Dr. Manhattan be flat...but he didn't.  This is like the same controversy that was around the troll in the first LOTR movie having twig and berries.  Fucking who cares?!  It's an R rated movie.  Everyone knew going in that there was a naked blue man.  If they were surprised by it, or disgusted by it...then walk the fuck out.  If someone seriously wants to complain about the amount of male nudity, then I would also suggest for you to STOP GIVING MONEY TO JUDD APATOW, YOU FUCKS!!!  Forgetting Sarah Marshall, Walk Hard, and a plethora of movies have come out lately with dick in it.  Guess what.  You have a dick that you see everyday, so it's not like you don't see it.  Hell, you probably beat off plenty.  You watch porn, where you see a dood's dick.  So whatever!!!  The fact that Snyder wasn't willing to cut it out makes me happy, as it meant that he wasn't going to cheapen the experience for the die-hard comic fans.

Personally, I thought the movie was fucking marvelous.  Yeah, after the sex scene, everything started deviating a bit much from the graphic novel...but the same impact and tone was there...and that's all that mattered.  I like how Snyder handled the material, and I think he did the graphic novel as much justice as he could.

Also, remember...we've still got the DVD edition coming, which will cut The Black Freighter back into the flick, as well as additional stuff.  With as great as it is now, I can't wait to see it with everything in there.

@Bulldog - they keep to the way the "rape" scene was in the graphic novel.  There's no actual rape.  He beats the shit out of her, though, which was still just as uncomfortable.

Holy shit, she WAS that chick, wasn't she?  I totally forgot.  Oh well.  I never really felt like the nudity was gratuitous in the movie at all.  It was more of a "people get naked, it happens" way.  The sex scene was, like I said, a lot like the 300 scene...damn near same positions and everything, which made me giggle a little on the inside.  Other than that, though, it was very much the situation of "what, superheroes aren't allowed to fuck?" type of question that I hoped it would raise.  It kind of surprised a few people in the theatre, as I heard a handful of gasps.  lol

Damn right dude. People get so bend out of shape at the sight of a penis on screen, you'd think the world was ending. That's good about the rape scene. Rape is pretty high on the list of things that disturb me, and I was always glad that they didn't go all the way with it in Watchmen.

I feel the same way about rape scenes.  They are ALWAYS uneasy for me to have to watch.  The two that really made me incapable of keeping my eyes on the screen were in Once Upon A Time in America and The Midnight Meat Train.  Well...the one in Meat Train wasn't really a rape scene, but she definitely wasn't enjoying it.  The Outlaw Josey Wales was another one, but again, it never really goes too far.

Despite the fact that Watchmen follows the graphic novel and doesn't have an actual rape occur...the scene is still disturbing as Hell, thanks to a great performance by Jeffrey Dean Morgan as The Comedian.  He sold that character wholeheartedly.  Oscar worthy?  Pushing it, but not quite there.  Still, he was excellent in that flick.

Right. It's still unsettling, and it establishes The Comedian as a misogynistic bastard, which is the whole point, but it doesn't go all the way to actual rape. It's perfect, because if Moore went all the way with the rape scene, I would have thought it was overdone.

This board has been amazing me lately...first their are folks who listen to the 2+ hour Bombcast more than once in a single week...now their are people disgusted and or made uneasy by a CGI penis.

Sadly, I am not shocked....meat cleavers to the head...bones being ripped through flesh...no problem

Penis wobbling in and out of scenes...cause for alarm...this country is sad.

no offence to everyone, but Dr. Manhatten was supposed to represent the perfect human form and that why he eventually went around naked, except for the camera. If people are too immature to handle some flashes of male nudity throughout 3 hours of entertainment, then you dont deserve to watch the movie.

Hey, take your generalizations about my country and shove them up your ass.  You're dealing with a lot of 14 & 15 year old males...of course they're uncomfortable about seeing male nudity.

I haven't seen the movie, but several of my friends have. They all had more problems with the ending than anything.

Seriously, it's just male nudity. I could get on a soap box about it, but I doubt anyone would care.

Would the soap box be something like...if it was only female nudity no one would have said anything, but a few swinging dicks on the screen and all of a sudden it's the end of the world?

Hey, take your generalizations about my country and shove them up your ass.  You're dealing with a lot of 14 & 15 year old males...of course they're uncomfortable about seeing male nudity."
Well now, when the whole country gets in an uproar over a single boob that eventually leads to a live sports event being delayed by around 10 seconds, I think it is a fair generalization to make! You can't sit there and tell me that America, and Western culture in general, to be fair, doesn't maintain double standards when it comes to nudity versus violence.

Wow, I must be hanging around the wrong parts of the internets. I could have sworn that I was the only human being alive who read the novel and enjoyed this film. I'm so glad that I'm not the only one.

I feel like my life would be so much easier if I hated it though. Defending something you like against wave after wave after endless wave of naysayers gets so tiring. It's really starting to bum me out.

I think i'm just gonna put Watchmen on my "stuff I will try to avoid talking about on the internet" list for now.

I plan on seeing the film with my brother.  He's read the graphic novel and I haven't, so I'm guessing we're going to have somewhat differing opinions on it (especially since he wasn't a huge fan of Snyder's 300).  Hope a good time is had by all, though.
As for the penis... c'mon.  Are we REALLY talking about this like it breaks the film?  If we all played the Lost and Damned and have not gone blind, I think we can deal with a little bit more (and may I add, more tasteful) male nudity.  It's the year 2009, guys...

I think the rape scene backs up this argument pretty adequately.

I dunno the PENIS wasnt that much of an issue, it was a little distracting tho.

...Im not gay  >.>

Umm i just watched it, it was long. Thats my review.

The Watchmen = It was long.

It was basically the comic book in cinema format, having recently read the comic, that left me with little else to do but look for inconsistencies.

I thought the ending was better than the comic.

"i'm not going to tell you any spoilers, I'm not going to give you my complete opinion, I'm just gonna let you know a few things about this Watchmen movie. If you've never read the graphic novel, it's too late to start. You're going to watch it, and you're going to be corrupted by the movie version first, just as I was corrupted by the graphic novel. So, that said, here we go:Best CGI: Dr. Manhatten. They got his glowy skin deal going on pretty accuratelyWorst CGI: Bubastis. I mean, a snow leopard with deer antlers would've been more believable.Best Sticking to the plot element: The characters. Absolutely spot on. Dan's still a wimp, Rorschack scares the poop out of me, and the Comedian, actually if anything, improved.Worst Sticking to the plot element: Everything after the sex scene. My favorite moment: Rorschack's "Never compromise" speechMy least favorite moment: Everything after the sex scene. Which gained a round of applause from the audience.Okay. That's my review.I hope you read the graphic novel.<3 V"
Hey Virago can you explain how the graphic novel "corrupted" you?

Hey Virago can you explain how the graphic novel "corrupted" you?"
Because regardless of what the movie was able to pull off, the old saying still stands:

"The book is better".

And it really is.  However, the movie is still amazing.  So, it's a win-win for any fan of the graphic novel.  = D

Also, someone is talking bad about AMERICA?!  WE'RE THE GREATEST COUNTRY ON THE FACE OF THE EARTH, YOU SHIT-FACED FUCKSTAIN!!!  COME OVER HERE AND SAY THOSE WORDS!!!  WE'LL SHOVE A FISTFUL OF URANIUM UP YOUR ASS AND SEND YOU BACK HOME WITH A DETONATOR STAPLED TO YOUR EYELIDS!!!

I mean...umm...sorry.  Look, I'm pissed about the fact that people are getting up in arms about the blue dick as well...but my sole argument is that people didn't seem to get up in arms when it was in Walk Hard or Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

So...what does THAT say about double standards?

Personally...Dr. Manhattan had an awesome dick.  I think that's what needs to be said.  I think that people with little dicks are jealous that a CGI dick is beating them out (no pun intended).

You should probably remember that most of the people here that are upset about this are people who have probably only seen themselves and their mother naked.
