Finished in '12

I don't want to set a goal, other than to play through a good portion of games bought on Steam. And to finally sit down and finish Jade Empire.

List items

  • 360 [01/12]

    - Anti-climatic ending, too many gadgets (never thought that'd be a bad thing), and side missions are too sparse. Somehow the combat, while perhaps better flowing than previously, just isn't my favorite. Plot-wise, things just seem to be missing - why was Harley tied up? what did Two-Face actually take from Catwoman? - but the problem is that I really don't care to find out.

  • PC [01/12]

    - For what it is, I had a remarkably good time.

  • XBOX [02/12]

    - Mediocre in many regards, not that bad in a few others others. Antiquated, yes, but playing this made me realize how much Red Dead Redemption got the Western 'right.'

  • 360 [02/12]

    - For all the problems with the campaign (boss fights, closed environment, lack of characterization), the ride it takes you on is still a blast. Just not a blast to write home to.

  • 360 [3/12]

    - Climbing is terrible, character models are horrendous, and the ending puts a bad taste in your mouth. But, there's something here that is fun. It's just a shame it feels incomplete and rushed.

  • 360 [3/12] - I loved the original and what Starbreeze did with it, and was skeptical with what the Dark Sector team could do (I did enjoy what that game was). The Darkness 2 is the best FPS I've played in the past year. Astoundingly beautiful both in loud and quiet moments, and surprisingly funny even with its gay jokes (rare? and debatable). This game left me completely surprised (except for the ending, foreshadowed entirely too much). Wow. This is what Syndicate should have been: fun and well-acted.

  • 360 [3/12] - Never have I spent as much time on a game as this one. Never. And while it lacks a fulfilling Dragon Age-like story, what it does scramble up has some charm, especially the faction quests. Luckily that's not why I kept coming back. This is: the combat is spectacular. The lush scenery keeps evolving, making the mandatory exploring at least somewhat bearable. This is not for everyone, I acknowledge, yet I can't help but say, wow, this game is great. (All side and faction quests I encountered are done - 195 completed. All lorestones collected. Total time: 85:18:24. Now on to the DLC.)

  • 360 [5/12] - Okay. Let's disregard the last hour of the game. ME 3 is a good game, but only because of it's interactive story. ME2 was the best game in the series because there was so much to lose. ME3... it tries to show how much there is to save, but fails in its delivery. The story as a whole escapes logic. It's more of a quick farewell than a engrossing goodbye.

  • 360 [5/12] - Quite possibly my favorite driving game this generation. Goofy and wonderfully implausible. [4/5]

  • PC [5/12] - So more of a partial completion, since the last two chapters still aren't out and I have a feeling it's going to take them a while. Definitely, for me, it's a must-play. It's just slightly annoying with its puzzles, especially the last one which has you mixing a drink. I have hope that the game will end well. [3/5]

  • DSi [6/12] - I don't know why it took me a few months to finish, over eighteen hours of play, because it's actually a really mediocre game. Though, the charm of the design and even the unevenly put together story made the game last this long. The combat is fun, and it does evolve, though it's quite an easy game. Really easy. Insanely easy. You will only find challenges in boss battles, but even then, it'll only take one more try if you fail. Try it, it'll charm you into playing it entirely, but please, stretch out your playtimes because otherwise it'll bore you to death. [4/5]

  • 360 [7/12] - This is not the Max Payne I loved. Considered just by itself, the game in underwhelming in the combat department and horribly the most violent game I've ever played. Quite beautiful, but also quite average. [3/5]

  • 360 [7/12] - My favorite game of from this year so far. [5/5]

  • 360 [8/12] - Feeling nostalgic. I always seem to forget how these brawlers don't hold up well because they're continue-happy / quarter-hungry. [1/5]

  • 360 [8/12] - Love the style, gameplay had some meat, story was at least compelling on basic levels, but still, it doesn't feel like I'd ever want to come back to this universe. [3/5]

  • 360 [9/12] - Why do I continue to punish myself with Spider-man games? The last decent one was Web of Shadows, my favorite being Ultimate Spider-man. This is just a mess. The city is a dead, blank slate, void of anything interesting, which is why it's stuffed with floating comic book pages. The characters are shit, the story is shit, the combat is shit, the level design is shit, etc. A whole of lot of shit. Shame that the web-swinging is probably the best thing, but that was perfected long ago. When Spider-Man 3 is a better game, you know you're in trouble. [1/5]

  • 360 [9/12] - Unlike the first Prototype, I stormed through the story and side- missions, avoiding the challenges. I think I would have appreciated it more if I took my time, playing longer than the two weeks I played this. But man, compared to Amazing Spider-Man, New York felt more alive even though there was more death. [4/5]

  • 360 [9/12] - One of the best atmospheres I've seen a shooter have. [4/5]

  • ANDROID [10/12] - All missions done, surprisingly charming. [4/5]

  • 360 [11/12] - 20+ hours, still not 100%. Vastly different from the ACII trilogy, and not for the better. Yes, trees are fun to run across, but what was introduced and dazzling in Brotherhood seems toned down and poorly executed. The modern sequences feel off, with Desmond killing dozens of guards and the characters wearing thin. I don't care about Desmond and his daddy issues, I don't care about Rebecca, yet I still like Shaun even though his character model looks like ass. Every mission feels path-driven; yes there are multiple paths to get the mission done, but each one feels crafted and not unique.

The side missions are where the game shines -- that's a damn shame. The main story should be what's satisfying, but it's not. The homestead missions are great -- truly -- but the crafting and selling just feels too far removed from gameplay. Even what is the most poorly designed aspect of AS3 also feels the same way: the weapons wheel triggered by RB is horrible and takes the player out of the action. Why that screen couldn't be a quick and fast transparent wheel a la Mass Effect, I won't ever know.

Still it's Assassin's Creed. Finally, I grow tired of it. The charm and novelty of the first game is now gone. [3/5]
