It's been a great year so far, and I have been pleasantly surprised to find that most of my gaming enjoyment has come from indies. Because many of these gems are likely to have been buried by the end of the year, let us not forget the Secret Best Games of 2013!
So punishing and so satisfying. Kerberos managed to bolt just enough graphical shine and sound design onto the traditional roguelike formula to make this game extremely compelling. It's hard as hell, but I always find myself wanting to go in for just one more run.
Random content, a sense of progression and tight controls on the level of Super Meat Boy. I've put 20 hours into this game and am not entirely sure I'll beat it, but I know it's going to steal a lot more of my time.
Believe it or not, this only came out on PC this May. Tables that are two years old to the 360 crowd are entirely new to me, and I love pinball. Love it.
Another pre-2013 port, but it came out in August this year and was responsible for rekindling my interest in fighting games for the first time in nearly ten years. Arcade sticks and Sanwa parts ordered a la cart were involved. Thanks, Skullgirls, I didn't realize I missed fighting games until you came along.
