My roommate watched me play, and she's not at all a video game person so I had a lot of chances to reflect on the series as a whole when I was explaining things to her. What I learned was basically that I wouldn't consider anything past the Shido/Akechi stuff to be a spoiler because after that, the game fell into it's regular formula.

During the Shido fight, because she'd seen how he'd ruined my life up to that point, she asked if he was the last boss in the game. I said no way, because these games always make you punch god in the face before they're actually over. 'You're going to punch god' is just a thing now, I guess? A big, impossible to defeat threat that you overcome by through the power of friendship? I don't have a problem with that, but it was something I started to consider.

Also fuck this game for making me thing Ryuji and Morgana could have actually died. After Shinjiro, I don't trust anyone or anything. When you get shot in the head by Akechi, my wild theories about what happened went from 'did i get a bad ending somehow' to 'am i going to finish the game as sae'. These games have learned how to psyche me out.

When Morgana disappeared, I started yelling at the TV because he was just a CAT. Teddie got to stay in Inaba and he was a boy that grew inside a bear monster. It wouldn't have been fair for Morgana to just be forced out.

Makoto! I thought I'd be all about Futaba, but she was framed way too much like a little sister. It felt like dating Nanako. Also, come on, Sojiro specifically asked you not to date Futaba. I love my Coffee Dad too much to do that to him.

Edit: Oh, I also really liked Hifumi.

I stayed with Ann's suggestion. 'The Diamonds', as in 'Marina and the'. I couldn't help myself.

I have two questions, if anyone could help me out!

My roommate's TV is broken so there's a section of the bottom right that I can't see, which is blocking some of the dialog boxes that I can't check the log for. So I'm doing fusion requests in the Velvet Room. I just finished the first one (Jack Frost with Mabufu) and I got the second one, but the box blocked it and I can't find it written anywhere else. Can someone tell me what the second fusion request is?

Second: How does the thief's guild stuff work?? I saw the tutorial box about it, but I was speeding through the more basic stuff I already knew so I missed how you can actually put it to work. When I check the menu's tutorial section, it doesn't actually say how to use it. Only that you CAN use it.

Besides this, I'm really enjoying the game so far! I'm in mid-May, about 15 hours in. The gameplay feels like butter compared to 3/4. They fixed SO many of the small mechanics that made me crazy in the other games. I can already tell I'll have a lot to say once I'm done with it.

I'm resisting the urge to dig up my PSP so I can replay Persona 3 Portable. I've been in 100% Persona-mode ever since I started rewatching the endurance run to have something VERY LONG to listen to while sewing, and now I'm getting JRPG shakes.

Just a little longer.... Until P5..... I'm so excited....

@wemibelle: I'm getting serious Emily vibes from your Ryder. It's like she got a haircut then decided she needed to slap all of Andromeda in the face.

@generic_username: I agree! A lot! Maybe it's my own personal bias, but ToS always stood out to me as a game that could have been perfect. I never played many other Tales games (still haven't gotten close to beating Abyss despite owning it for nearly 8 years, mostly because I don't like the characters), but the only other JRPS I've dumped over 100+ hours into have been Paper Mario TTYD, Persona 4, and Persona 3 Portable. It's clunky and has problems, but ToS was really something special when it came out.

What I wouldn't give for a re-release that tweaked the gameplay and gave characters like Presea and Regal more time. I mean, Zelos gets SO MUCH compared to nearly everyone else. He turns against the church that supports (and exploits) him, can betray you for real, overcomes prejudices against half-elves, has backstory involving his mom and sister hating him, and clearly empathizes with Sheena for feeling like an outcast. And I know I'm still missing a LOT of the other stuff he's involved in. I wish threads that develop your party members were mandatory in games like these. :T

Alternately, I think the game had way too many mid-level villains. The Grand Cardinals had cool designs but barely did anything but show up, posture about how great they were, and then die. That time could have been better spent elsewhere.

Anyway, good luck with your post! It's nice to see people still ruminating over games that were pretty formative for me, haha. There's clearly a lot that could be said about it as a whole.

I got a copy of Uncharted 4 with my PS4 and I'm not even going to open it. Sorry, Nathan Drake. It was never going to happen between us.
