I don't really like most jRPGs because they rely heavily on anime tropes, which, if we go further than SNES era, usually means hot springs and boob jokes along with pretty samey characters, so, honestly, the only ones I liked are Nintendo-made RPGs like Mario ones and MOTHER. Ni No Kuni was also quite charming, going to pick up the sequel soon.

Still, I think my favorite video game story is MOTHER 3. I quite like well-executed tonal whiplashes, and that game can go from heartwrenching to hilarious in a minute. While its satire is pretty weak, I really like its criticism of capitalism, and the fact that it tries to not be black-and-white with its themes.

I can't stand those tile-moving things where you have to make a picture from a grid where only one out of 15+ tiles is empty.

But overall I really don't like any out-of-place mini-game in a game that tries to be serious. Video games don't have the best stories, and I feel like they're just making it worse by including puzzles for things like hacking. Having to play an easy clone of an old arcade game in a serious situation really breaks my immersion.

I think the worst mini-game that comes to mind are the puzzle rooms from new Donkey Kong games. While they at least don't try to shoehorn a different genre game and are still platforming experiences, in both Return and Tropical Freeze there are maybe 5 variations of them in the entire game, and you usually see 1-2 puzzle rooms per level. They're your usual "collect all bananas in 30 seconds", so they don't even feel different from each other. Now every time I replay those games I try to actively avoid secrets, which doesn't seem like a good thing.

My boyfriend has some Mass Effect ones, which I like. I was surprised to learn they were from Funko, since they just look like chibi versions of two characters (I think it's Rex and Garrus, haven't played ME in quite some time). I think they're really lazy, not incompetent as some people like to joke. They will never do a simple human character look good because they have their own shitty style, but when characters actually look unique and can't be represented by just swapping the hairstyle and clothes, they can actually make something that looks pretty decent.

Finally played the demo. Holy shit I did not expect to enjoy it as much as I did. I've only played as the Thief so far, and that was cool. The battles were a bit slow, especially afrter you get out of the town, but I'm guessing they'll pick up the pace once you have more ways to attack and party members. The only thing that I don't quite like are the visuals, since every screen of the game feels like somebody made this beautiful 16-bit esque landscape and somebody else just pissed on it. Everything's yellow and dark for some reason. But overall it's a super cool artstyle. I especially enjoyed the super big boss sprites. They look cool, and fighting a Butler who's 10 times your size on the fight screen was pretty funny.

I'm also really, really hoping that we'll finally get a more mature jRPG that doesn't have teen boobs and jokes where the only punchline is "tits". I have really low tolerance for bad anime tropes.

I understand your general thoughts, OP, but I do think you might be overthinking it a bit. After all, same can be said for all sorts of things. Various sports events, for example, have so much shit accosiated with them, I wonder how some people care. And they aren't that different from E3 for us, regular people. You watch stuff, alone or in a group. Many people go as far as to declare a "winner".

I think there are a lot of reasons to hate E3, but it being marketing is not on the top of the list. It's ok to love a commercial for a thing you think you'll enjoy in the future.

I think I enjoy it less and less each year, too, so I just decided to not care about E3's intentions. For me, and it seems some others, it's a way to riff on awkward and weird conferences with a group of friends (or sometimes just strangers on the internet). If there's a good video game - good. I might buy it and enjoy myself. If not, it's probably just funny. Thinking about it as an event you watch together definitely removes that layer of insane amounts hype, which is a bit weird and usually leads to disappointment.

Nintendo kinda shot themselves in the foot this time. Heavy look at Smash would be disappointing for some people, but less so, if they haven't announced Bayo 3, Metroid Prime 4 and Yoshi before that. Knowing about those titles made it feel very incomplete.

It was okay, but and Nintendo definitely knew that it didn't have enough. It would be one of the shorter Directs if Smash announcements would be quicker, which is why we got tons of info like "ROM has an almost-invisible meter on his side!"

Of course, it's Nintendo, so we'll probably get 3-4 directs until the end of the year, and those always have a surprise or two, so I'm not too worried.

What else were we expecting? We won't hear about Mario or Zelda for a few years yet. Something unannounced? These aren't rhetorical questions, I'm genuinely curious as to what kind of thing people were hoping to see here.

Out of things that weren't announced but are very likely, there's still Animal Crossing and Retro-developed game(s). Many were also hoping for Odyssey DLC. Also I'm not following that game, so I might not know something, but SMT5 seems not that far off.

I've suffered from depression for most of my life, but once it got so bad I had to go to therapy, and it certainly helped.

And it does usually take some time. I remember being barely human for a few months - unable to eat, vomiting all the time, trembling and shaking, being physically uncomfortable doing anything... I do think meds helped me moreso than conversations did, but to be fair, I was never fully comfortable with my psychologists. If that's the case I would suggest looking for somebody else.

Wow. It's a shame that I have a pretty extensive library there, otherwise I would quit using it completely. For the past year or so I was already unable to find anything because "new", "on sale" and "coming soon" sections were all full of garbage, and now I'm guessing there will be more of it.

And yeah, I have no idea how people managed to twist this into a censorship issue. Half the games on there barely work!
