Originally, it was going to be a squad-based FPS.
It's now looking more like a standard FPS from what IGN's stream indicated- at least for the single player.
Keep in mind, there still is drop-in/drop-out co-op for up to 4 players (And 2 player split screen). But from what I've heard- AI squadmates were ditched a while back in development. (May very well be for the best- if the NPC's skating movement shown off in the IGN stream was any sign)
Who knows- it may surprise us with above-average enemy AI and/or better gameplay than what we've seen so far (ESPECIALLY from the IGN stream). But what we DO know is that at the very least, the graphics of this game really showcase how rough and lengthy this game's development was. (It graphically looks noticeably worse than AvP 2010- unfortunately)

@Sticky_Pennies: So it is as I feared :( somehow I tought it would go the route of say Stalker or Farcy 2/3 ... a shame
Yeah... Not sure where you got that impression. :(
To my knowledge, unless I've missed something, even in its early stages Colonial Marines never went in that direction- it was going to be linear with an emphasis on squad-based tactics (Until again, AI squadmates were supposedly ditched).
Sadly, suffice to say- I will not be terribly surprised if the campaign is not balanced for single player and is only really playable in co-op.

All I know about the game is the YEARS of it being advertised at my local GameStop, and the commercial for it displaying some really poor facial animations. It just looks like a bad game.
If the IGN stream was any sign- its not just the facial animations that are laughable. :(
Human character movement- both in the cutscenes and of NPCs in-game- looks absolutely horrific.
