Video Review - Rogue Legacy 0

Rogue Legacy is a roguelike featuring a randomly generated castle and an interesting ancestry system. Every time you die, you are advanced to the next member of your family. You are given a choice between one of three relatives, with different classes and traits. These traits can be anything from Color-Blindness to dwarfism to IBS. These can make your trip through the castle easier or more difficult, but they help ensure no two trips into the castle are exactly the same. For more, check out the ...

Video Review - Out There: Omega Edition 0

Look, domestic abuse is a real issue and one that Out There: Omega Edition from Mi-Clos Studio doesn't address at all. But, if, like me, FTL is a former lover of yours, then Out There is the abusive rebound you probably convinced yourself was the best you could do after the break up. Both contain a lot of the same qualities: there's the space-themed roguelike, the 2D spaceship cut-aways, the modular narrative structure, but where Out There sets itself apart the most is its brutality. For more, ...

Video Review - Spacebase DF-9 0

Spacebase DF-9 is a space station-building tycoon game with a storied development. Initially conceived during developer Double Fine's Amnesia Fortnight event, Spacebase went on to enter early access with hopes of a long, successful development period which would allow the game to keep expanding for years to come. Despite promising early sales numbers the development couldn't sustain itself and was cut much shorter than everyone expected. Version 1.0 does still offer a full experience, albeit one...

Video Review - Ingress (iOS) 0

Ingress comes from Niantic Labs and is a location-based area control game. The game has a narrative but its obtuse and inconsequential so all you need to know is that there are control points (portals) that your team needs to attack and capture. Since this is GPS driven, you're probably going to do some walking/hiking/climbing/trespassing, sort of like a neo-geocaching (can I trademark that?). For more (including my dirty iphone screen) check out the VIDEO REVIEW....

Video Review - Max Gentlemen (iOS) 0

Max Gentlemen is a self-described "arcade style manners simulator" and comes from the developers of Organ Trail, The Men Who Wear Many Hats. Max Gentlemen takes its inspiration from email male enhancement spam and requires players to collect hats and make the biggest hat stack possible. This is done in one of two modes: drinky and dodgy. In Drinky, players acquire more hats by collecting drinks from the bartender while avoiding thrown obstacles. in Dodgy, the player must jump their hat stack to ...

Video Review - RollerCoaster Tycoon 4: Mobile 0

RollerCoaster Tycoon 4 Mobile is the latest entry in the beloved franchise from publisher Atari. This time its developer On5 at the helm and what they've created is a Frankenstein's monster made up of small pieces from the original games bound together with free-to-play and mobile game garbage. The result is a barely-recognizable abomination whose sole purpose is to trap unknowing players in a money vortex. On5 and Atari seize every opportunity to halt player progress and force them to either st...

Video Review - Valiant Hearts: The Great War 0

Valiant Hearts: The Great War is a 2D adventure game from Ubisoft Montpellier. It is one of the few games set in World War I and one of the few war games to focus on puzzle solving rather than combat. The game follows three characters as he war takes them in different directions and occasionally brings them together. Their stories have their ups and downs but, aside from the ending, they aren't gripping. It's not always consistent in its execution but it gets points for striving for something di...

Video Review - The Wolf Among Us 0

The Wolf Among Us comes from Telltale Games and continues their evolution of the adventure game genre. This time, they've set their sights on Bill Willingham's Fables comic book universe. The game takes place in the fictional borough of New York city called Fabletown where Bigby Wolf seeks to solve a murder. As is the case with other games in the genre twists, turns, and revelations ensue along with plenty of dialog trees and point-and-click investigation. For more, check out my Video Review. ...

Access Granted - Don't Starve 0

Don't Starve is a rogue-like from Klei Entertainment. The game drops you into a randomly generated world with no instructions or directions and tasks you with surviving. The core of the game focuses on the player juggling their health, sanity, and hunger. This is done by collecting resources, crafting, and exploring. But don't be fooled, the world of Don't Starve is a harsh one so prepare to die and die a lot. For more information, check out my video....

Video Review - FTL: Advanced Edition 0

FTL is a sci-fi themed Rogue-like which tasks the player with traversing randomized sectors of space in mission to defeat an enemy flagship. In the grand tradition of rogue-likes, this game can be punishing, with players often ending a run with nothing to show for it. While the main objective in the game is to beat the boss, a lot of the fun comes from unlocking new ships and layouts. The Advanced Edition makes this easier by offering more ways to get these unlocks. For more, check out the Video...

Video Review of The Stanley Parable 0

The Stanley Parable from Galactic Cafe is a unique, narrative-driven first person...experience. The player's interaction with the product is fairly limited, often just pushing the character in a chosen direction, but the drive comes from the context given from the narrator. For more check out my Video Review....

Video Review for Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons 0

Brothers: A Tale of Two Sons from Starbreeze Studios is a third-person puzzle/adventure game with a unique control scheme (you really need a controller for this experience) and a powerful narrative. It is also one of the best looking games built on the Unreal 3 engine. For more check out my Video Review....

Video Review for Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag 0

Assassin's Creed 4: Black Flag from Ubisoft improves upon many of the mechanics of 3 while not addressing much of the series' overall narrative. While the gameplay is some of the best in the series, the story just seems to tread water. For more, check out my Video Review....
