Dan's argument about why PUBG is his GOTY even though Zelda might be his favorite game of all time makes zero fucking sense and will infuriate me up to and including when he tries to explain it on the GOTY Podcasts

He can argue all he wants, but Jeff already said at PAX that PUBG can't quality for GOTY because its still in early access and not a fully released game. Though he said he might change that rule for 2018.

You're misquoting him a bit - he said they would have to cross that bridge if it does not get released officially prior to end of 2017. It's still supposed to at this point.

For a guy who says this stuff doesn't matter, Jeff does get oddly pedantic about his own made-up rules sometimes.

I don't understand why they can't just agree among themselves right now that clearly the "early access" distinction no longer matters and they will consider anything for the 2017 awards. I'm not sure what the "rule in place at the start of the year" distinction really makes.

Also I totally understand the intent of Dan's argument i just think he failed to explain what he really meant. I haven't played any of his top games so i have no dog in the fight.

He said on the PAX panel that he didn't want to change the rules this year just because an Early Access game that they liked finally arrived, but it's the catalyst for a possible change going forward on how this thing is judged. However, it wouldn't stop PUBG from being considered for other non-GOTY categories.

He also stated that this could all be moot since the game is supposed to get a full release this year and that "anything goes" on their individual GOTY lists, but I'm pretty sure he was adamant about holding true to no Early Access games on the site GOTY list.

Another trailer with the whole co-op banter, though at least this one was more restrained.

It looks interesting and I'm looking forward to seeing more. I just hope it pans out better than the last few BioWare games that came out.

That trailer was a whole lot of nothing. I did have a stupid grin on my face the whole time though, mainly because I was a bit incredulous about the entire video. Like man, this felt like going back to the old days of trailers and showing off how powerful your system is, especially with the real person amidst all the particles and "magic."

With that being said, I suppose I don't mind if the whole industry moves back in the direction camp/shlock with their trailers.

I just played Ori and the Blind Forest on PC earlier this year and loved it, despite it's depressing look on the futility of life.

From the trailer alone I feel deeply saddened just looking at that poor little owl, and I feel like I will be gladly putting myself through more fun, yet depressing, times in this sequel upon its inevitable release on PC.

This QL was hilarious, if for no other reason, than Dan's reaction to it. I found myself literally laughing out loud several times due to his severe reaction to the announcer, in addition to him parroting what the announcer was saying.

But seriously, this game doesn't look good at all. The humour is trying way too hard and isn't funny, nor does the gameplay itself seem good enough (or even decent) to have people try and look past that. It's free as part of PS+ so technically I've "purchased" it, but to me it's not even worth the bandwidth to download and never play like many of the other PS+ offerings I have on my system.

A lot of this seems to check-out with what I can recall from memory, though I can't recall many of the smaller, finer details. I still remember the penultimate part of the game being fairly out of left field for me, but admittedly it's been several years since I've replayed FFIX (it's definitely the PS2-era FF game I replayed the most of).

Do you take notes as you go along? Obviously you take screenshots as you go along but I assume you must do the former as well. Otherwise, you have an extremely good memory Mr. Pie.

It's been a long time since I've played IX but for a good long time I always felt it was my favourite of the PS2-era games and I'm pretty sure I still hold to that for the most part.

As for Zidane's crazy flip-flopping of character and mood, could we possibly attribute that to the fact that he's an awkward teen that hasn't really had much interaction aside from an abusive father figure and a bunch of bros in a travelling thieves guild/acting troupe?

The reason being that sometimes the way people deal with heavy situations is to use humour or to do something that distracts from it. Personally, I have sometimes followed up some really somber conversations with a light-hearted quip or something meant to illicit a different emotion (laughter, disgust, maybe some amalgamation of the two) to lighten the mood or to divert attention away from the previously discussed topic. Is it feasible that Zidane is embarrassed/uncomfortable delving into these deeper, more serious topics (such as the story about his past) and so has to go back to his swashbuckling persona in order to change the subject?

I'm wondering exactly how much (or little) of a reaction you will have to some of the later reveals in the game. Some of them are quite good but I'm not sure how much of that is nostalgia and how much is because it is actually good. I know you'll never play it but I really enjoyed Crisis Core and felt that it gave appropriate backstory to basically a side-character from VII. It's amazing how much of an emotional reaction that game got out of me considering the fate of the protagonist was already known.

I wouldn't have necessarily put Vincent into the unmissable category, but I think quite a bit of the backstory around his character is fairly interesting and provides more details into some facetes of the story that is worthwhile.

I really enjoy IX and I think it's the most replayable of the PS1-era Final Fantasy games. I wouldn't really label it as near perfect despite how much I enjoyed it. Shit got crazy at the end too, in a "we're off the rails now boys!" kinda way, and to this day I can't quite understand why it went that way considering the game was fairly logical up until then.

@zombiepie: #3 - Unless you're having considerable trouble against the mobs, I don't think grinding for levels is necessary. It greatly depends on how you feel you are progressing and if you're doing fine, I wouldn't worry about it. I do have a tendency to do the same thing that @lawgamer mentioned in his post, so if you're concerned about the growth of your characters, maybe give that a shot.

#4 - A lot of the good ones have already been mentioned so I'll just go into some more details about the "concept" of mastered materia. A huge late-game benefit to mastering materia is that it gives you the ability to combine all your mastered materia of a single type (i.e. - magic) into one super-duper materia. That materia is also free of any drawbacks (no reduction in hp, etc) and it's great to be able to combo this "super-duper materia" with something like 'All' so that all your magic spells are multi-target. This is extremely late game stuff so I wouldn't worry about it now (if at all for you) but it's quite a sweet benefit.

Another aspect of mastering materia is that once you've achieved mastery of it, it decides to split off some part of it to create a new baby materia for you. So if you have Fire and you manage to get it to max level, it will create a level 1 Fire materia so you can start the process all over again! But seriously, it's good for rare materia that you cannot easily get ahold of.

#5 - Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom was pretty good. Temples are cool. Doom is cool. Hey, let's make our own Temple of DOOM! ;D
