@zombiepie: Nicely done regarding the Blitzball match. I have a bit of a shameful secret to admit in that... I actually kinda like Blitzball? It's not a great mini game per se, but it struck a chord with me for some reason or another.

And that's not all too bad. I once was doing the Lightning Strike thing and thought I got to 200 by my count. I was going to go over by a bit but my mom or sister called out to me and I got slightly distracted, so I got hit. Turns out I only had 19x instead of 200, so I had to do it ALL OVER AGAIN.

Not all the incidental dialogue is translated. There are scenes when people are watching a TV broadcast and the TV dialogue is not subtitled. The train announcements as well while not critical would be nice as well.

Love the Japanese voice cast so far (Aoi Yuki, Rina Satou, Ikui Otani, Aki Toyosaki) all people you will recognize if you have watched recent anime!

Yep, noticed that too which was a bit of a bummer. The train thing was a little better because it was just announcing stops, and right after the Japanese announcement ended the English one started up with essentially the equivalent of "The next stop is..." TV stuff was a bit more annoying though.

I didn't know much about the Japanese voice cast going in but I was delighted to almost instantly recognize Ryuji as the same voice actor for Light from Death Note, even though I've only watched like 5 episodes of the anime (read the whole manga series multiple times though), who also voiced Ignis from Final Fantasy XV. The other one I recognized as soon as they spoke was Morgana; I could not contain my excitement when THE Tony Tony Chopper started talking to me.

Just an FYI for anyone thinking up names but who haven't gotten their copy yet, there's a maximum limit of 8 characters for your given name and 8 characters for your surname, so some of the longer names I've seen in this thread won't work.

Had I known there was a "canon" name from the manga I probably would've used that (as I did for P3 and P4) but since I didn't, I kind of randomly came up with a name for him. Thus, Hiro Fujikawa was born.

I actually don't think your thought is that controversial, in that I'd probably agree that Yuna is the most poorly voiced character in the game (though I am also not blaming the VO actress).

I think the reason that Yuna is so open to all of Tidus's comments about being from Zanarkand is because of his father, Jecht. As you brought up, he was one of the guardians for Yuna's dad so she had quite a bit of interaction with him. It is natural to believe that Jecht's initial reaction to arriving in Spira would bear some resemblance to Tidus's, and he would've likely brought up the fact that he was from Zanarkand as well.

Being that she was already exposed to this once through the father, going through the exact same thing with the son would probably result in her believing what he is saying to be the truth. Or I could be reading entirely too much into that. (Full disclosure: I did beat the game back on PS2 a LONG time ago and I also own the remastered version on Vita, though I didn't get that far before getting distracted by other games. That said, I'm fairly certain the above theory is my own and not something I'm pulling from the game...)

@justin258: I do remember hearing from somewhere that it won't break when used against bosses, but haven't had the chance to test it myself.

And yeah, I've been using the parry to kill Guardians and have gotten pretty decent at it, though occasionally I'll end up fudging the timing multiple times in a row...

@barrock: that'd be nice. I do enjoy the ability to play the game on the go but my preference is definitely to play docked as the game just feels grander that way.

i personally feel it looks better fidelity wise at least, and i can deal with the framerate dips. though i've been playing plenty on the go as well.

Agreed. For some reason or another, I often feel constrained when playing on the small screen, like the Switch's screen is a bit too confined for my tastes. Aside from one instance of choppiness during combat on Death Mountain, the only frame rate dips I've really encountered are in towns or in the Lost Woods. They're unfortunate but at least they don't really impact gameplay.

I've also come across times where my sword doubled its damage up to 60 from its normal of 30. I think I was in places that were steeped in Ganon's corruption when it happened though, so maybe that was what did it?

I remember booting the game up on the Switch yesterday and there was a firmware update for the console but didn't see anything for Zelda specifically. I'll check again later today after work but I hope this wasn't just for Wii U.

@mrcraggle: I think Digital Foundry did a test and the game does indeed have dynamic resolution scaling. I guess it just wasn't fully implemented to all problem areas, or perhaps the issues in towns were so dire that this couldn't be fixed by that? Pretty sure it was Zelda...

Vaan? From FF XII.

On second thought... it was definitely his fault.

I wonder if you guys remember the rather convoluted plot of Xenogears in the ps1. I know it comes a bit out of left field since we're talking about Tales, but if I may open the funnel a bit to jrpg's in general and how they handle the romance factor Xenogears comes straight to mind. A game about mechas, gods, a shitload of abrahamic mistical references (like Final Fantasy plus Neon genesis evangelion times a 1000), monsters, the end of the world and all that jazz. But leaving the rather messy and interesting (in my opinion) plot aside, the story focuses quite a bit on the relationship between the two main characters.

Sure, when push comes to shove it suffers from a case of destined boy meets destined girl, but it's a slow burn, and in my opinion, handled in a much more mature fashion that any other JRPG I've personally played. It also helps that for once both main characters are adults, not teenagers, and I was glad that the writers kept that in mind.

Another one that stands up in my memory is Valkyrie Profile. But then again, that game takes every page from various gothic novels and sticks to that style with zealous rigor (And considering you meet every main character as they're about to die, you can have a pretty good guess if those romances land more on happy or on a sommer note).

And going back to the Tales at hand. Thought both Legendia and Abyss where decent enough. On story I liked ToS better, although I had a big problem with Lloyd. He's just one of those MC's I could never get behind. His clothes were stupid. His face was stupid. His whole self is one big ball of stupid. That said, I liked that game quite a bit, specially the last third of so.

Does that ever happen to you guys? A main character that, mabye through no fault of his or her own, you just can't stand?

In my case I have to say Lloyd and Tidus. Got no problem with them, but they can go straight to hell.
