My Favorite Games of 2017

To Be Continued...once I replace my dead PS4 :(

(Also: I don't have a Switch, so I haven't played Zelda or Mario yet)

List items

  • Persona 5 is stylish AF, with one hell of a soundtrack, some great dungeon design, and some really dark themes. It improves on Persona 4 in almost every way, and is one of the best gaming experiences I've had this generation. My favorite Persona game (with P4 close behind), and my favorite game this year.

  • I started playing this game years ago, and it's one of the only games I keep coming back to. The Stormblood expansion really upped its world building game with a better story than Heavensward, more interesting dungeons, and two new DPS classes. I'm looking forward to where they go from here in terms of future patches and the next expansion (fingers crossed for Blue Mage).

  • When I first heard about Horizon, my expectations were almost nonexistent. A third person action-adventure made by the same team that did Killzone? Post-apocalyptic robot dinosaurs? Really? I figured I'd give the game a pass. It wasn't until reading all of the glowing reactions to the game that I decided to pick it up, and I'm glad I did. Guerrilla Games made a beautiful looking open-world game with a great protagonist, fun bow / trap mechanics, and an interesting story that kept me engaged until the very end. I can't wait to see what this studio comes up with next.

  • Ubisoft took some time off of their yearly AC release schedule to make some pretty drastic changes to their formula, and it has really paid off. The game is set in Ancient Egypt, with Witcher 3 style combat, experience levels, and a loot system that really sets this game apart from the rest of the series. Exploring ancient tombs, fighting war elephants, and meeting Cleopatra and Caesar are some of the real stand out moments. I'm excited to see where the next game takes place (Edo era Japan please!).
