Most Disappointing Games of 2009

List items

  • This is a game that had everything in place to be one of my favorite games ever. A Tim Schafer GTA/God of War style actioner based around the mythos and imagery of heavy metal? Hell, f'in, yeah. Then we found out that it was more RTS than anything, something everyone failed to mention before the game came out. While the humor, imagery, and setting are in rare form (as you'd expect from Mr. Schafer), it felt like they tried doing too many things and wound with a hodge-podge of gameplay ideas that were all mediocre, at best. That is not to say the game is terrible, I still played it to completion, but the squandered potential makes this release incredibly disappointing

  • The Resident Evil games have left an indelible mark on my gaming history. Being the first real horror game (or movie) to ever really scare me and a game that factors heavily into my teenage gaming years, I have a soft spot for its campy dialogue and dodgy controls. So much so, that I even bought a network adapter for my PS2 just so I could play Resident Evil: Outbreak.

That said, Capcom has turned Resident Evil into a fairly competent, co-op action game, pure and simple. The overwhelming sense of being overpowered and alone, where anything and everything could pop up and take you out at any time is gone, replaced by a cover system, QTE dodge commands and a personal armory complete with body armor and upgradeable weapons. Of course, all of this is necessary now that the late-game 'not-zombies' carry machine guns and rocket launchers. This is the same reason that I loved Resident Evil 4 up until the island level with the heavily armed mercenary Las Plagas. Combine all of this with an ending that made me rage, a shoehorned versus mode, and an ad slogan, 'Fear You Can't Forget.', that couldn't be farther from the truth and you have an action game that I want to get behind whole-heartedly but judging this as a Resident Evil game drops it into competent but ultimately disappointing territory.
