Best of 2020

2020 has overall been a challenging year for everyone. And even when it comes to games there have been a lot of good games, but not many that actually blew me away. Especially Nintendo bummed me out this year. A stark contrast to 2019 where I had multiple Switch games in my list. Lockdown also managed to rekindle my interest in Fortnite. Playing that with friends was one of the things that kept me sane. To be honest that is probably my real number one game. But because we are adhering to the rule of what actually released in 2020, I will not put it on here. You will also notice the lack of Cyberpunk 2077. That game just ended up being a huge bummer with its bugs, performance and honestly pretty unimpressive gameplay and structure.

List items

  • Gears Tactics really surprised. I played it on the Xbox Series X and I just loved it. They managed to transport the Gears gameplay into a tactics game in real interesting ways. For sequel I feel they need to improve the meta game though. These side missions got a bit tirering at times.

  • I have over the years fallen out of love with the traditional JRPG, which is which is why one of my favorite series moving in that direction left me sceptical. I have to say though they kept what makes Yakuza Yakuza and managed to make one of the best JRPGs I have played in a long time. I didn't even enjoy Persona 5 this much.

  • Doom Eternal is a really good game and it probably would have ended up higher on the list, but they kind of overdid it with mechanics in this one. At times it made it also a bit too difficult to play on a pad. None the less still super fun.

  • Fantastic CRPG, that is just bogged down a little bit by bugs.

  • A really good remake, but stretching Midgard over 40 hours was a little bit too much. I feel like it could have been cut shorter by 10 hours and then it would have been a better, tighter experience.

  • Fantastic Tetris game with a surprisingly addictive multiplayer.

  • Who would have thought that EA would actually give us another space sim? On top of that it ended up being quite good. Some of the mission design could have been a little more creative and if MP had more content the longevity would have been better. Lots of potential for an even better sequel.

  • The best cyberpunk game released in 2020 that answers the question what would happen if we mixed Mirror's Edge with Hotline Miami. The answer is a really fun time, with some difficulty spikes that are a bit too crazy.

  • Oh, The Last of Us Part II, I honestly never wanted you. I thought the first game didn't need a sequel and on some level I was right. On a technical level it is very impressive and the gameplay has also been quite improved, but it is also an exercise in excess. The game is way too long for what it is and loses its steam halfway through. The themes of the story are also obvious and just get hammered home over and over again that it becomes quite tiring. A good game, but could have been better.

  • Resident Evil 3 is the opposite of Final Fantasy 7 Remake. In the remaking process this game actually lost too much. Why did they cut out all that content and made Nemesis less of a threat than Mr. X in the Resident Evil 2 remake? Then it also had that garbage multiplayer I didn't feel like touching again after two tries. What the Resident Evil 3 remake does still have is very solid gameplay and a great presentation, so it still barely made my top 10.
