Game of the Year 2014

List items

  • I never played Black Flag, and by the time I got around to where I could I just really didn't want to jump into a full-length Assassin's Creed. The series had burnt me out over the years, but when I heard Freedom Cry was going to be a stand-alone, I got really excited.

This is easily my game of the year. It's a short and sweet bite of exactly what I wanted. The ships are awesome, the story is great, and the ending is moving.

Out of everything this year, this one is still in the back of my mind.

  • This series came out of no where for me. I loved TWD, but heard that Wolf Among Us was pretty good too. After giving it a chance, the story and characters really hooked me. The voice work is excellent and game is all-around just a great time.

  • I honestly had low expectations for this game when it was announced, but the obvious amount of effort that went into this game shows from the start. The story is insane and hilarious, the writing is classic South Park in all the best ways. Not a difficult game, but a fun ride all the way through.

  • I first heard about Divinity on Giant Bomb, they only played it for a few minutes and it looked fun, but I never went further.

A few months later me and my brother were looking for a multiplayer game and read some good things about it. It lived up to everything that was said and more. You don't really "get it" until you start playing the game, there's so much to do and you just feel like a part of the action. It's one of my favorite RPGs of all time.

  • I think we all saw this one on GB. I know it's not "out" yet, but we payed money for it, so it counts to me.

My friend bought it and we had a 6-player Gang Beast party, and it was glorious. The game still needs some work, but man is it a hell of a lot of fun!

  • The first season of TWD was one of my top games of last year. While the second season isn't as good, and has some rather boring episodes, I was pretty content with how the second season wrapped up. I felt some level of uneasy closure, which I guess is about as good as you get with TWD!

  • I originally avoided this game because of all the negativity surrounding it. Recently it went on sale for $20 and I decided to give it a go.

I've heard a lot of people say it doesn't "feel" like Elder Scrolls and I have to disagree. While there are some spots where it's obvious they have to make concessions, this game as a whole is extremely fun and feels just like an MMO Elder Scrolls should feel. Don't listen to the nay-sayers, this one is a keeper.

  • Bastion was a -great- game, and while I don't have the same attachment to Transistor, I do appreciate it and really loved planning out the attacks. Also the art is gorgeous.

  • This one is both hot & cold for me. The game itself is one of the best MMOs I've ever played. It's production value is great and the game is just so damn fun.

However, after a few months the publisher, Trion, has proven to be extremely unreliable and has basically driven the game into an unreparable state. It's a sad sight to see, but this game will go down in my mind as one of those "what could have been" games.

I don't regret my time with it, but I also find myself likely to not ever trust Trion again.

  • Ah, League of Legends. The one game that I always come back to when there's nothing else I want to play.

I've recently taken time off from this game to play other things, but I still have given more time to this game this year and in years past than anything else.

Free is free and fun is fun.
