I wondered the same thing. I was completely lost and pretty put-off by the game. I did some more research (youtube, reddit, etc) and figured out quite a bit. I'd say the first thing to do is to just look for random bounty's to collect. Start 'Super Cruising' at a relatively low speed and search your navigation menu for 'Unidentified Signal Source.' These are basically random events (could be stolen cargo to be picked up, a wedding escort, or a fire fight going down between police and wanted criminals.) Target ships and see if they're 'WANTED'--if they are, kill 'em and collect the bounty. Just warp out when you're done and look for another Unidentified Signal Source. This will get you some starting cash. From there there's basically four 'professions' you can pursue: bounty hunting, trading, mining, and exploration.

Keep in mind that I believe you get a 100% sell back value on weapons/modules and a 90% sell back value on ships. I'm still very new to the game but I already have a fair share of fantastic stories to tell. The goal is make more money to buy better stuff; however you do it is up to you. How you get there, is kind of the narrative / fun of the game. I was pretty skeptical of the game from the Quick Look, but the amount of nostalgia it made me feel was enough to make me pick up a Saitek X52 and buy the game!

I literally cannot watch the Virus Named Tom quicklook, it buffers after two seconds of video play. Some days I can watch things, others it's completely unwatchable. I'm using default ISP DNS (Time Warner Cable), just did a speedtest at 25mbit down, and trace routes to LA and im in SD, so fairly close. Not sure what the issue is. HD videos on all other sites stream perfectly (gametrailers, hulu, etc)

I played D2 on an annual basis for about a decade.. I played d3 for 100 hours before I was absolutely over it--as in, no desire to play it at all.

What'd Blizzard f up in regards to D3? Two things:

1. There's no more finding fat loots. In d2, you'd do a few hours of mf runs and you were nearly guaranteed to find some badass end-game item (shako, shaft, ss, soj, titans, whatever); you'll find one of those in a relatively fast period. Grind mobs in 8 hours for d3 and what do you get? trash to vendor and buy items on the AH. It's not fun. Seeing meph or baal pop and drop uniques that you KNEW were awesome was a fantastic experience. Right-clicking on yellows for 30 mins so you can vendor them is pretty gay.

2. Your character is never overpowered. In d2, after you invested 50+ hours into a character, you were a badass. In d3, you still get two shotted by every mob. No fun.

Really neat and smart way to approach the "Hey... so I know we said we we're going to make a really great PC version last time, but we totally fucked it up and it was garbage... but this time we promiseee!!!" haha.

I pre-ordered it. :)

I thought the prototype 2 was badass! It's fun being overpowered and just wrecking shit after a long day of work. Exploding enemies into piles of limbs and body parts, one-shotting helicopters, tanks, jumping city blocks; boo to you guys that didn't like it.

I'm pretty sure the AI battles have a sort of stacked deck. The most fun part about the games is the multiplayer and coop multiplayer against humans, but you can't do that until you unlock decks.. and they doubled to tripled the amount of time it takes to unlock a full deck compared to the 2012 version. I'd pay to unlock them if possible, it's not even worth my time... but you can't even do that yet! Grinding random variables has to be the worst thing ever invented, don't know why developers keep fucking making it so prominent in games.

It's been an issue for me since they swapped over to the new video player-- progressive HD is nigh unplayable, but streaming HD seems to work about half the time. Not sure what they did, pretty lame though..
