GOTY 2015 (games that are good and good for you)

It's 2015 y'all, and you know what that means. Time to put some of the games I played this year into a list of general goodness.

HONORABLE MENTION: The Witcher 3

I love what I played of The Witcher 3, but I just haven't spent the time in it to flesh it out. Only about 10ish hours, I think. It's great, but I can't say anything about 90% of it yet.

List items

  • I've been playing Nuclear Throne for years, but it's officially "released" now. It's hard to explain why I love this game so much, you just have to play it. You have to feel Nuclear Throne to understand why it's so great. It's the silk of video games.

Everything about Nuclear Throne is what I'm into. It's this chunky, brutal shooter where everything has punch to it. Few things feel better than the shooting in this game, and it's one of the few things that I recommend to people without qualification. Play it, y'all.

  • Fallout 4 is an open world game designed specifically for me. Hey, you like Fallout 3 a whole lot, but wish the shooting was good? We got you. You want to customize the hell out of your guns to make them behave differently? We got you. You want to roll around the wasteland with your well-written friends and just sort of do whatevs? WE GOT YOU, DOG.

It has its issues, sure, but Fallout 4 overtook Oblivion for my favorite Bethesda game. It's a hell of a thing.

  • Like Fallout 4, Massive Chalice feels like a game made just for me. I love this kind of turn-based strategy, I love permadeath, and I love the concept of legacy. MC has all of that and it's great and I'm so happy it came out as well as it did. One of my most memorable gaming moments of all time was in this game. I still think about it occasionally.

    It's really good, guys.

  • Undertale is a special little guy. I was put off of playing it for a long time, but my friend convinced me and I'm glad he did. It's just so goddamn charming. Best new character of 2015 is Napstablook with a bullet.

  • This is the first MGS game I ever played, and I think I came in at a good time. Say what you will about the story and Konami and all of the other nonsense: this game feels phenomenal. It absolutely nails the open world free-form stealth mechanics. I saved more clips playing this game than anything else, which is testament to the dope shit that happens so frequently.

  • OlliOlli 2 is the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 2 of OlliOlli. The additions it makes to the mechanics are so smart you sit there and think about how you played the first game at all without them. The rule stands: if you want your sequel to be good, add manuals.

  • It's another Batman game, I know, but it was a really good one. A nice cap on one of the better series of the last few years.

Also, I liked the tank stuff. Yeah. I said it.

  • The MOBA that fixes the stuff I hate about MOBAs. The fact that I can jump in every few months and not feel totally lost cements this as my favorite one of these.

  • GOOOOOOOAAAAAAAAAAAAL!

  • I love me some roguelikes, and this is a great one. It leans hard into it's aesthetic and whipping around space as a transformer is as fun as you think it is.
