Great blog. Metroid is also my favorite series, and I agree with you that the atmosphere is such a huge part of that.

The gameplay is obviously fantastic, and many other games have tried to emulate the basic beats. But while I love the genre as a whole, the original franchise is the only one I really come back to regularly.

It's the music, the places, the isolation, the iconic design of the badass powersuit, and the frankly tragic story of Samus Aran that pull me in. It's a compelling sci-fi tale that isn't bogged down the traditional ideas of exposition (mostly), instead choosing to convey its themes through art and music and atmosphere. It's something that I think could only exist as a video game, and that's pretty amazing.

@mcblemmen: They gave Eisenhorn the benefit of the doubt because that game isn't close to finished yet.

When they said this game was 50 dollars my jaw dropped to the floor.

Just to clear up a few things about the card system and microtransactions in this game for people who might be interested:

1) Card packs. Card packs cannot be bought with real money. They are bought with "reputation", the ingame currency. You CAN buy boosts to increase your reputation gain. I don't know how much they boost it by because there's been no need for me to even consider getting one. You also get free card packs getting each character up to 3/5 mastery (you don't need to pay for the master challenge to get these rewards. That's just for skins.) So that's 28 packs of cards (148 cards) at the moment, on top of what you get by naturally playing.

2) Mastery. As previously said, you actually do get mastery rewards without having started the master challenge for the character. You get the card packs and tributes. You do not get the skins, though. IMPORTANT: THE XP BONUS FROM THE MASTERY CHALLENGE IS NOT AN "IN-GAME" BONUS, IT IS A BONUS TO THE POINTLESS PROFILE EXPERIENCE EARNED AFTER THE GAME. That would be ridiculous, otherwise.

3) Deck Slots. You start with 8(?) deck slots. You can buy more with real money or with in-game currency. They cost slightly little more than card packs do (about 3-4 matches worth). You can earn free deck slots from leveling up your profile, and sometimes from daily rewards. This is part of the reason I'm glad I got in early: I can easily get more deck slots as they slowly release heroes, so I'll have a deck for every hero in the game. Each hero also comes with a starter deck, which while not IDEAL, is still viable.

4) Card system. In a match, the maximum number of card points attainable by each character is 60. Cards are balanced around this fact, with stronger cards costing more points, and this is a large part of the strategy in deckbuilding. You have to make sacrifices and cut corners, you can't just put 3-point cards in everything. It's easier to build up cards as fast as possible to get their complete bonus. It's an interesting system.

The game is NOT free right now, although it will be when it's fully released. It costs $20 at minimum, but Epic are supposedly going to do some free-to-play weekends sometime soon. An open beta is supposed to start this summer, as well.

Sorry for the wall of text, but I really like this game and don't want too much misinformation spread around. It's really not as pay-to-win as it sounds, or else I wouldn't be wrecking all my games without having spent a dime.

Been playing this with my dota buddies for the last couple of weeks, and we're all pretty hooked. The card/deck building systems are pretty complex and fun, but from my experience having better cards won't save you against a better player.

Pretty much every hero is fun, and it feels really really good to hit people with your abilities.

I don't know, you kind of lose me when you add the floating numbers loot grind to a game with real guns, set in a real city, which is trying for a realistic tone.

Stuff like Diablo, Borderlands, and Destiny are clearly fantasy, so my mind can reconcile that fairly well. This... this is just silly to me.

"Yo, I got this sick unique M4 that does twice as much damage as your M4 because it's colored purple."

"Oh man, I have to dump 13 mags into this guy because he's got a name over his head."

"Our game is a gritty, mature tale about a city under siege from within." lol.

Looks pretty fun, though.

FYI if anyone is still playing this game... You can totally buy fuel resources. But I don't think Drew can at this point in the game. The only reason I bring this up is because I didn't figure it out until I was damn near done with the game.

You do it from the PF menu. You know, the pointless one where it simulates battles with other players. You can trade the PF points you get for all kinds of resources.

THE MORE YOU KNOW
