When I think of The Last Remnant I cannot help but think about @dochaus and how their attempt to finish the game slowly ate away at their humanity. It was really something.

Doc... it's been ten years. NOW is the time!

Now that the big Warhammer III event is basically over, I fell pretty good about my predictions for Warriors of Chaos. I talked it out with @arbitrarywaterfor a bit, but I feel like with the confirmation that the Realm of Chaos will be represented that they are going to play into the mono Chaos Gods. Also, Be'lakor has to be a given at this point.

Due to recent events, Giant Bomb Premium will be free to everyone during the month of May.

@marino How do we take advantage of this? Premium content is still locked for me. Thanks for the wonderful post, as always.

Hey, there. I'm sorry for the confusion but I misspoke and issue a full retraction. Premium will be free this month for pre-existing subscribers.

I sincerely apologize for the misunderstanding.

I remember when Giant Bomb had two Brads and the one everyone hated didn't deserve any of that shit.

Calling Microsoft a "software company" is a bit misleading. First, you have to point out that their Surface line of laptops and tablets are here to stay despite initial skepticism. With the Surface Duo, they are getting back into the mobile market, albeit only tangentially. Likewise, Azure and cloud computing requires a monstrous amount of hardware. They continue to invest millions into infrastructure and even support other companies in hardware.

I think what all of this points to is the model set forward by Google when they introduced the Chrome browser. Tech companies are moving away from the hardware versus software schism and are instead recognizing technology has always been a hybrid of both. In the end, that synergy is likely what Microsoft wants out of their consoles both now and in the future.

I played this maybe half a year after it's release and gave up after a week. The overriding memories I have of the game are that I despised the UI, which felt like a mess even by gacha game standards, and that the sheer volume of side stories available made it incredibly hard to figure out what I should be doing at any one point in time.

Granted, I didn't go in ready to commit to really figuring out 'how to play' as I already had two other gacha games I was playing at the time but the thing that would have hooked me the most, fun FF fanservice and stories, felt way too uneven in quality for me to want to spend any more time in it.

A shame too, since I had some pretty good rolls.

It definitely one of those games where you are bound to roll well at least once per playthrough. But I agree that the UI is downright atrocious. At least with Genshin Impact the game knows to tone down its mobile-based trapping into clever UI systems. The side stories I found more manageable as I only ever felt obligated to play the side stories for the Final Fantasy characters I genuinely cared about. As my blog suggest, I do not give a shit about the Type-0 characters and this game did not convince me to see the errors of my way.

Every gacha game has mechanics that lead to inscrutable sentences like this:

I know there are likely a handful of Opera Omnia fans who will chime in that even these challenges are possible to complete for free if you grind out levels or resources in alternate dimensions.

Preserving the games isn't easy and given that they're intended as disposable products and most people don't care that much when they go offline...I get why they don't do it even if I wish they would.

I can assure you, trying to condense twenty currencies and leveling mechanics into a single sentence is no easy task. However, I will object to your suggestion that because these games are "disposable" they difficult if not unworthy of preserving. First, Nokia's Snake is important the same reason why Microsoft Solitaire is in the "Video Game Hall of Fame." They become cultural phenomena and lend to the ubiquity of gaming with non-gamers. The long-term reality is that no developer makes their game with the plan of it being preserved for years via emulation. No developer looks forward to someone ripping their code and posting it online. In fact, some developers find creative ways to make such efforts difficult or downright impossible. The issue I think is more concerning with mobile games is that few people are even trying to save this area of gaming. Developers rarely feel the need to preserve their base code and the emulation community views them as unworthy of their time.

I'm with on wondering how they'll pull off pointing these existing factions towards the "happening" area way off to the right of the map. Already sailing the length of the world is a significant time investment due to the size of the Mortal empires map, and that's not even a complaint on my part more fascination with the scale the crazy bastards have made this game to date.

I wonder if the map won't have a sail off the right side of the map and show up on the left type of deal. Asking for a globe is probably too much but with all the stuff they've packed into the game so far... maybe?

I actually discussed this matter with @arbitrarywater not too long ago. Both of us kind of came to an agreement that the world map will likely wrap around like a global similar to the planetary stuff in Dawn or War 1 and 2.In terms of the loading and engine-based stuff, that part of the game simply needs to get better. Whatever tech they used for Two Kingdoms has be used in Warhammer III. The amount of time I wait between turns as the game calculates the next moves for the AI is downright atrocious at times.

I ctrl+f'd Tomb Kings and nothing showed up. Sounds about right.

The Tomb Kings are definitely up for next episode. That said, they really are up there with the Skaven in terms of being in a perfect position. All I can see is for them to get a better Lore of Magic or at the very least be able to overcharge their magic to have AOE spells. The only other suggestion I can think of is for them to have better armor piercing options and for the early stages of their campaigns to be less fucked. Arkhan the Black is a ton of fun... but that is only if you manage to survive his starting position for twenty turns.

So, fun fact! I tweeted this review on the Community Twitter account and the devs of this game ended up reading your review.
