As intended by the developers, the home country of Strange Journey's protagonist will change depending on what regions the game sees release. In the Japanese version he is a JSDF soldier while in the American version he is a US Marine.    Despite the fluctuation of his ethnicity, in any version of Strange Journey the protagonist is simply an experienced soldier hand-picked for the Schwarzwelt mission due to his superior combat skills and leadership qualities.
