Just to help out.
If you still don't get it after listening to the Bombcast:
1. Get Quake (for windows anyway):
http://store.steampowered.com/app/2310/ (cheaper!)
http://www.idsoftware.com/store/
2. Install Quake
3. Get NQuake:
http://nquake.com/
4. Install NQuake.
Hint: your PAK files for your Steam copy of quake are in:
C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\quake\Id1
That is all

The follow-up to id's 1993 game Doom, and one of the earliest first-person shooters to make full use of 3D polygonal graphics and level design. Featuring a dark and gritty atmosphere inspired by gothic and Lovecraftian fiction, players traverse numerous dimensions in an attempt to stop the invasion of eldritch forces led by the mysterious "Quake".
This week's TNT
" @ajamafalous said:I should, but I'm a sucker for a good deal." @jadeskye: I bought the Quake Complete pack during (I think) Christmas for like ~$15, thankfully. "i purposely avoid steam at christmas generally. I find my wallet tends to lighten considerably. "
"Oh man, $50 for a pack of 18 games, 5 of which I'll actually play?
TAKE MY CREDIT CARD"
If you're having trouble getting the game installed from an original disc in Win7/Vista 64, dosbox works nicely (crank up the CPU cycles though, or it takes foreverrrr). You'll also likely need to patch it up to 1.06 - you can get the patch here and run it through dosbox (another 16-bit dos app!). After that's done just install nquake and point it to the pak as usual.
p.s. I ran into a strange issue where nquake had created a dir called pak1.pak in <installpath>/nQuake/id1 instead of just copying the file over. In that dir was another copy of the paks. I fixed things by just renaming the pak1.pak dir and moving the pak1.pak file out of it. If you're finding you can only access the shareware episode and none of the dm maps, check this out first.
For those of us who despise the updated graphics, can we still play using OTHER source ports?
I mean when the GB server is up can I still connect to the IP in oh say WinQuakePro?
OK, here's a question: Jeff mentions EZQuake and NQuake in the Bombcast. They both look to do the same thing (updated Quakeworld client). What are the pros and cons of each? I've used the various Doom source ports (ZDoom etc) in the past but I've never delved into the world of Quake source ports.
I'm curious what the turnout for this will be, hopefully enough to keep the servers full.
Still, Kane and Lynch got released last week or possibly even some other game. Hell, even Quake 3 might be more accessible to that young hip "console only" audience.
I imagine the turnout will be relatively small (still enough to fill the server a couple times over, though) for this one, which is a shame since it's a game I actually have and would be moderately interested in playing. I have class for the first hour and a half of TNT, though, so that means no TNTs for me until December.
nQuake isn't actually a source port, it's more of an automated installer for ezQuake that adds a bunch of preconfigured packages like high-res textures, maps, and bots to play against offline. It takes a lot of the guesswork out of getting a client working with that stuff." OK, here's a question: Jeff mentions EZQuake and NQuake in the Bombcast. edit: weird stuff going on with the forums today :o
When I try to run ezquake I get "Could not load OpenGL subsystem" You need to have proper graphics card drivers installed. [GLW_StartOpenGL()] Is there a way to make this run in direct3d?
" Installed it and played against some bots. Lost really really badly. There's no railgun in Quake 1, eh? :( "Hehe, there's no rail, but the rocket launcher is almost a railgun. The shots are very fast (like everything else in the game!), and one direct hit to an unarmoured guy will kill him unless he's found a megahealth. With the ridiculous player speed having a weapon with spash is what you'll want to be using in most situations anyways, at least starting out. If you're running nquake, the bot difficulty's pretty by default. You can lower it by typing "skilldown" a couple of times before adding the bots. It's much easier to get a handle on the game when you're not getting blown up every three seconds :D

Unless there is some crazy vulnerability (like the rcon exploit in Quake 2), I think I will just roll with original quakeworld. Putting high res textures on a low poly world has never looked right for me.
Hopefully this will be a success and Quake 2 (and maybe a mod like Q2CTF) will be next.
I'm sure they'll have instructions and stuff when they put up the TNT blog post, either before it starts or when they start streaming the video." how-am-I-gonna-put-it-politely? w h e r e i s t h e I P a d d r e s s ? warm-up-sessions? "
I'm too afraid to even go play against bots...I'm going in cold and horrible, then I'll probably be kicked for the next round of people. Can't wait! ;)

I'm thre worst at pc gaming. I've got ezquake now, but what's the difference between 'ezquake' and 'ezyquake-gl'. gl just seemed a bit brighter.
More importantly, where in the interface do I connect to the specified server? I gather that i'll be typing in an ip address at some point to connect, but where do you even input that address.
" @Steve_C: Press the Insert key in the server browser. "Oh, I see. That confused me since I was just looking for a join game thing.
This is my first time playing quake actually. Multiplayer is pretty ridiculous. People are too quick or they just spawn camp and gib me straight away.
