Ralph Baer passed away yesterday at the age of 92. Often known as the "father of video games", he developed the Brown Box which would go onto become the Odyssey, and is also credited with inventing the Light Gun and the popular electronic game Simon. He is an absolute legend, and his creations and ideas have made large parts of my life possible. He will be missed.

(Thanks to @siphillis for the video!)

    Thank you Ralph Baer.

Woah, really? That's big. RIP to one of the biggest players in early home computing.

Computing in general is so young that almost all of the pioneers and heroes of gaming are still with us. This is pretty much the very beginning of starting to see those people pass away from natural causes isn't it? I've thought about it before and it feels weird.

RIP in peace, Baer, your influence on games has been huge.

Industry vets passing away is kind of evidence of how old video games are now. This kind of stuff is commonplace in the music and movie industry, but it's only in recent years that video games are losing the pioneers of its early years. Doesn't really mean much, I guess. Just interesting.

RIP, Mr. Baer. I remember learning about him a long time ago when G4 or G4-TechTV (whatever) did a video thing on him.

I knew nothing about him or his contributions before reading the O.P., but R.I.P Ralph Baer. Thank you for being one of the major players in creating the future with which I enjoy my video games in :).

@siphillis: Thanks for posting the video. Hearing him describe looking for a challenge in these later years because he's survived his wife and friends made me very misty-eyed.

    RIP Mr. Baer.

I have a feeling a lot of people are gonna be saying this same thing. I'm one of the people who also saw that special on G4 about him...........G4 of all places, hah. I've also been a little confused/annoyed at how nobody ever talks about him.....ever. whatever though.

Mr. Baer, you're being appreciated and thanked every day, whether people know who you are or not. Video games are probably the most complex artistic medium we have right now, and it's still growing. Rest in peace.

    Bummer to hear :(

Maybe I'll hunt down an Odyssey just to have it to honor where games have been.

@siphillis: The matter-of-factness with which he spoke about outliving his wife and friends made me tear up. A brilliant man who birthed an entire art form. RIP :(
