Sigh. Someday I'll get to play you.
Sigh. Someday I'll get to play you.

Rayman Legends has long existed as one of the few bright, shiny third-party exclusives Nintendo's been trumpeting since the Wii U first had games to show. By all accounts, Ubisoft was fully on board with the idea of Rayman as a Wii U exclusive, talking up all the nifty multiplayer things that could be done only on the Wii U's GamePad as it promoted the game.

So, I guess we're taking all that exclusivity pillow talk back now, because Rayman Legends is no longer a Wii U exclusive. Ubisoft today announced that Legends has been expanded to also include Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions.

"We heard from many Xbox & PlayStation owners and Rayman fans who told us they really wanted to play Rayman Legends on their current system," said Ubisoft's Geoffroy Sardin, in the announcement press release. "We decided to give the fans what they wanted while at the same time broadening the audience exposed to this innovative and memorable game."

All that's well and good, except for the part where the game is also delayed. Originally, Legends was slated to release at the end of this month. Instead, the Wii U version has been pushed to September, where it will launch alongside the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions.

Without reading too much into this announcement, it's hard to picture a version of this scenario that isn't a bit of an indictment of the Wii U's current strength at retail. If Ubisoft really believed Legends would succeed on its own as a Wii U title, it wouldn't be doing this. You don't delay a game six months and add two aging console ports because you're expecting a game to do really well on that originally announced platform.

Regardless, every time I've had my hands on Rayman Legends, it's looked and played fantastically. So if this means more people have the ability to play it, then I can't see much fault with that. Still, I had been planning on grabbing a Wii U prior to Rayman's originally planned launch this month. Now? Uh...I don't know. Maybe when Pikmin 3 comes out, I guess.

So this is the second Wii U exclusive in two days that is no longer a Wii U exclusive (Ninja Gaiden 3: Razor's Edge being the other one)? Alright...

One more reason not to get a Wii U. Still amazed at all the people back when it was announced were convinced this would remain exclusive. Origins was a multiplatform seller, leaving it's sequel on Wii U would only hurt sales.

That's pretty cool, now at least everyone gets to play it. As someone who owns all the consoles, I don't care what comes out on what, im just happy for everyone to get the chance to play good titles on whatever system they own.

Well the good thing is that more people gets to play it.

But on the other hand I just can't help feeling a little bad for Nintendo. It was after all one of their big third party exclusives but now they lost that too.

I feel worse for anyone who used this game's exclusivity in their decision to buy a WiiU.

I'm curious if this is this an isolated case, or a sign of things to come third-party-wise for Nintendo.

Reminds me of the SFxT locked DLC characters, in that "Hey, instead of releasing this thing right now because it's done on this platform, we're going to delay all versions by 6 months until we're ready to release on all platforms." It makes business sense to have a unified launch, but it sucks for anyone who was looking forward to playing the game later this month and the WiiU version is (presumably) ready to be printed but won't be.

Great that more people get to play this. The real question is why the delay? If they still need to work on it and to justify the constant delays ubisoft asked to make go multi than great, but if the Wii U version is done and they just want to launch it alongside these ports than fuuuuuuuck that.

Still probably going to buy it for Wii U. It was the game I was going to buy the system for anyway but it also seems like some of the co-op functionality might be better on the Wii U. Specifically the rhythm stuff.

to everyone who's saying the wii u will fail. well the same was said about the wii and the ps3 ( don't know about the xbox 360 ) and they did fine in the end.

i predict the same will have with the wii u, it takes time to get the same player base that 8(?) year old consoles have.

on topic, maybe the time has come to finally end with all the silly exclusives. AND WHY NO PC VERSION! if ubisoft is telling the truth than why not do a pc version???

I could care less about it losing exclusivity, but my ENTIRE FAMILY was hyped for this game at the end of the month. I just preordered it last night! I sold my Mario game so I could buy this because the family didn't even want to play it, but we ate the Legends demo alive. Ugh...so disappointing.

As much as I'm really glad that more people can play it now (I never understood why it was WiiU exclusive in the first place), it's a titanic bummer that it got delayed from the end of this month all the way until SEPTEMBER.

@ProfessorEss: Both the same to me but there are some people I know that just got thew Wii U for Bayonetta 2 for some reason. I guess the only thing that I would want to play is a Zelda game but that won't go on other consoles unless say the Wii U fails and they have to make games for other consoles. We can only hope.

I called this months ago, and plenty of you responded saying I was wrong.

Anyhow, the thing that sucks about this for me personally is that it may be one less title I purchase for Wii U; I wasn't stoked on the GamePad mechanics, and trophies for a game like this are hard to pass-up.

This game was one of the reasons I bought a Wii U.

I feel sorry for the people who picked up a Wii U to play this; this was actually going to be one of my reasons to get one. Same thing happened with that port of Ninja Gaiden 3. On the other hand, there are still things on the horizon that are going to make me pick up a Wii U anyways (see: Pikmin 3, new Xenoblade), so overall, it kinda sucks that it's getting pushed so far back. Glad more people overall will get to experience it, I'm still hyped.
