Loved both, but I can understand the reasons why people didn't like them.

Anyone else like Jeff or Brad?
I'm madly in love with both. Not literally, of course. And I'm talking about the games, not Brad and Jeff. Although I do like them a whole lot.
I think The Ballad of Gay Tony would have to be my favorite out of all of them.
I think RDR is pretty good and one of the best last year, but it goes a little flat after the first few hours. There are clearly a lot of improvements to the GTA formula that will carry over, but I think GTA4 is one of the top 10 games released this cycle. It's weird, I like RDR and can see in a lot of ways where it is flat out better, but I'd much rather play any post-3 GTA game.
I guess to be clear: I like them both, but am kind of a GTA fanboy.
" I'm madly in love with both. Not literally, of course. And I'm talking about the games, not Brad and Jeff. Although I do like them a whole lot. I think The Ballad of Gay Tony would have to be my favorite out of all of them. "From the looks of things, you'd much rather have a Ballad of Gay Jeffy!
I loved GTA IV (got 100% completion and played both DLC episodes), but kind of had to force myself to finish RDR, after which I couldn't care less about any multiplayer or DLC or side-missions. It's not that RDR was a bad game - it definitely wasn't. I think I'm just not that into westerns, mostly.
I didn't play GTA IV when it came out, but I did pick up RDR and loved the hell out of it. I loved it so much that as soon as I finished the story in RDR I put GTA in thinking I would finally give it a try, but I just couldn't get into it. I don't know if the order I played them in was the mistake though; it could be that I would have loved GTA if I had played it first.
I hate the GTA series in general, well find every game really boring but I found RDR to be bearable. I just hate the kitchen sink approach when you have a lot of options but those options are very shallow. Plus the combat was just too easy. My favorite part about RDR has to be the setting and the horse controls. The story is overrated but some of the set ups of he missions were interesting.
GTA IV sucked because of lack of checkpoints. RDR and subsequent GTA addons addressed that issue. All developers should take note, if you do a mission that takes 20 minutes, and you die at minute 18, don't make gamers do the whole fucking missions again. I never beat GTA IV because of this fact.
I really enjoyed GTA4, it remains one of my favourite games from this generation, i bought a 360 just to play it and i wasn't disappointed with it; and it has since been the only 360 game i've paid full price without waiting for reduction (and will most likely if i have the money at the time be followed by LA Noire) it was also the first GTA game in which i've finished the story - thinking of playing through it again soon actually
however i don't get the love for Red Dead; its a fantastic game and i'm enjoying it, almost finished it - put 20 hours in so far, i enjoy the universe but there's a hollowness that is the antithesis of the GTAIV universe which was so lively and active that it made you completely believe in it, Red Dead by contrast feels like a Wild West simulator - i love playing it, if i can use that analogy, as a 'wild west simulator' but otherwise its not terribly fun in that typical GTA fashion
i totally agree that the mechanics of GTA that Rockstar seems to have allow to permeate every open world product they ship such as RDR and it appears LA:N as well, have to be overhauled, its pretty broken, it was fine in 2008, especially as the scope and depth of GTAIV made you forgive them, and i still play it now and it doesn't annoy me, but if they were to release GTAV with similar mechanics or at least without significant update to the gameplay it'll make it a harder sell
but to answer your question; yes, i too, like both brad and jeff
I bought GTAIV at full price and initially had a good bit of fun with it, but it got to a point where the checkpoint system (or lack there of) became a major issue. Start a mission, drive to someone else, drive to area across map, cutscene, 20 minute shoot out OH SNAP YOU DIED, go back and start that shit again. Fuck you Rockstar North.
I bought RDR for $15 new off of Amazon during those crazy ass deals, played the hell out of it (Rockstar San Diego knows how to implement checkpoints, huzzah!) and greatly enjoyed it. I'll admit I'm a sucker for westerns, but I thought it was a great game.
The lesson I'm taking away is that not only should I never buy a Rockstar game at full price again, but that every other Rockstar studio is better than North.
Overall I love both of them. Each one had its own moments of repetition. I particularly hated the home missions near the end of RDR. Why they decided to put so many in I have no clue. I got the point after the first two, but no, I had to suffer through like 4 more. The ending is awesome though, despite the huge downgrade.
I loved GTA4. But I tried to go back and play and just cant, it is fucking ugly to look at. But it was a product of its time. Came out when there were only imitators. But RDR was good. I can see why it was game of the game for a lot of people. But I just could not invest myself into it and just did not connect with me. I think it is like citizen Kane. I get why people say it is a good movie, I just dont like it.
Hmm I think that GTA IV was a good game, but it wasn't for me. It just wasn't arcady and goofy enough for my taste. San Andreas and Vice City were way more fun for me and I really had to push myself to complete the game. RDR was great but not as good as Mass Effect 2 if you ask me.
I guess I am kind of on the Brad train - and we all know where Jeff's loco is heading towards :-D
" @PrivateIronTFU said:Uh, yeah. Who the hell wouldn't?" I'm madly in love with both. Not literally, of course. And I'm talking about the games, not Brad and Jeff. Although I do like them a whole lot. I think The Ballad of Gay Tony would have to be my favorite out of all of them. "From the looks of things, you'd much rather have a Ballad of Gay Jeffy! "
" Nope, love them both. But i always love Rockstar open-world games. The Gta Games, Bully and Red Dead are some of my favorite games of all time. "Same. Usually I'll respect people's opinions, but HOW COULD ANYONE NOT LIKE THESE GAMES?!
I certainly enjoyed GTA IV a lot, but it also had a lot of issues I didn't like (LIKE THAT DAMN RUN BUTTON NONSENSE!). Most of the issues were solved in RDR though. Most of them.
For me GTA didn't seem to be that much of an end to it all where at least RDR was presented better at having an end to the main story, I finished off RDR but not GTA, maybe it was because the side missions in RDR were less in number or the world less enjoyable to free roam so I finished off that one off but games like GTA or Saints Row I tend to lose interest in after a while.
I liked a lot of GTA IV, but RDR was way better for me. Honestly I think it was the lack of shitty melee that made it better. That and the only thing that I love more than New York is a well done western.
I was amazed by GTA4 for about 15 hours. When the missions got longer and more diffcult the horrible checkpointing became a problem. I have not finished the game because of that issue. RDR fixed my problems with GTA4 but was much less impressive to me.
" I'd wait til you've played more RDR before making a judgement, I was pretty impressed at the start too but ending up thinking it was just average. "I feel comfortable making that judgement because I've gotten past the point where most open world games lose me and I'm still liking it.
That point is usually when you're taken to a new town/new part of town, and I realize that now there's more space with more missions to do that are completely meaningless to the core story, and exist solely as filler.
After getting to Mexico in RDR I just kept playing for a few hours more, and after stopping for the day I thought to myself "Huh. This is where I usually start hating these"
I don't like Jeff because he didn't really give RDR a chance. He didn't even give a real excuse. Just said it wasn't for him. However, I'm not much into Brad either because of Starcraft II. I've played the game and I can't really see what's so special about that game. What makes it any different from other RTS'? Well, besides the fact that it's big in Korea.
