Around the same moment Red Faction: Armageddon hits UPS trucks, SyFy will begin airing an origin story based in the same universe. The oft-talked-about pairing between THQ and the cable network begins in earnest March 2011, kicking off with a two-hour pilot for a hopeful TV series called Red Faction: Origins.

The pilot (read: producers aren't sure we'll buy into this) will be set between the events of Red Faction: Guerrilla and Armageddon and revolve around another less-notable Mason, Alec Mason's "last surviving son" Jake.

    No Caption Provided

In the show, Jake finds himself in an unusual pickle. A couple of decades after Martian freedom, Jake's sister Lyra is kidnapped by "vengeful enemies." But just as Jake finds her after a long search, a "new enemy swarms across the planet" and he learns that his little sis is, in fact, one of those bad guys. She wants what they want--the red planet in chains. Talk about ironic, right?

No word on exact date or what it'll take to keep the project afloat, but we'll surely hear more of this partnership as the 2011 date comes closer into focus.

How much backstory do we need? Between this and that prequel XBLA game, I'm not sure we need this much Red Faction.

I thought the prequel to Red Faction: Armageddon was Red Faction.

Well, a TV series based on a video game is probably a better fit than a movie.

I can't wait to see the crappy special effects.

I just remembered I don't have cable TV anymore. Anyone know if it will be on the Hulus or the Netflixes or the internets?

Hope the story is better than guerrilla. I thought the game was really cool, but had no idea why I was running around blowing crap up. (other than it was awesome) I enjoyed the story in the original more.
either way, color me excited. love RF, love SyFy.

I will laugh if/when the game looks better then the shows special effects. Can't wait for the obligatory scene of some kid playing the game in the background too.

Man, I really hope this turns out good. Sci-Fi has turned out some pretty decen't original TV-shows in the past. Let's hope Red Faction follows suit.

i thought we were calling it 'preLC'
anyway, I don't know about this, I never liked the Guerrilla story to begin with, and now a show based on it...doesn't sound too great...

this is going to be great. but seriously make it an FPS again! Red faction one and two were great. Not so much 2 but it had great multiplayer. I loved how you could make custom AI opponents and they would level up and get better at the game,

I loved the first two games, but I really thought Guerilla was pretty shit and I am not getting great vibes from the new one either. I think I am getting to the point where I am done with this franchise.

Yeah I agree with whoever said the special effects will be bad. SyFy doesn't seem like it has the largest budget for shows based on video-games...or anything really.

I like the idea of tv shows based off of video games than I do with making movies off of them.

Agreed.  I don't know what bothers me more: Going away from a very successful and fun Guerrilla formula or this milking of the franchise.  Maybe Armageddon is good, but I think I'd much rather of had Guerrilla 2.  That game was a lot of fun and could have been improved with some logical additions like more customization, character progression, co-op, etc.  The idea of limiting the scope and adding monsters sounds tired and played out.  No one was doing what Guerrilla did as far as destructibility and the balance to the combat was also very interesting in how it made you feel somewhat weak so you had to always be on your toes and keep on the move.

Couldn't have a more tired subtitle than "Origins" either.  This isn't even the origin of Red Faction so that makes no sense.

It doesn't need to have a crazy emphasis on story, just pretty awesome action. Sure I'm a sucker for excellent story telling and intriguing characters, but you don't always have to have that intellectual narrative to be compelling. If you ever enjoyed movies like Rambo and Predator, you'd understand.

    Nothing wrong with that.

I'm looking forward to it. Some noteworthy actors/actresses in this series that piques my interest. Robert Patrick, Kate Vernon, Brian J. Smith... I'm curious how this series translates on the TV. Now to find a friend with cable...

@Meowshi: I thought it was goofy in a lovable kind of way, but nothing I'm interested in admitting I've seen. It just wasn't very good.
