Boom goes everything
Red Faction Guerrilla is a 3rd person shooter as well as an open-world adventure game made by THQ and Volition; the people that brought you Saints Row 2. Nothing about the game significantly stands out except for the destruction but all the good qualities come together to make a very fun game.
Red Faction Guerrilla is the 3rd game in the Red Faction series, the first two being on the Playstation 2. In this game you are Alex Mason, a miner who has come to mars to start a new job with your brother. Upon arriving, your brother shows you how the EDF (Earth Defense Force) has taken over Mars and is ruling communist style. Just after doing some work your brother is killed by the EDF and you are forced to join the Red Faction, a rebel group that has broken away from EDF rule and are trying to liberate Mars for the people.
EDF has taken control of Mars in different regions which you will take back you one by one. There are six regions in total to liberate and you will have to blow up everything in your path to do it. As you destroy more EDF facilities in the world this will bring the moral up in that region and sometimes if you engage in a firefight some of the locals will come out guns blazing with you. The main gameplay feature for Red Faction is the destruction. Volition has made the GeoMod 2.0 engine which allows every structure you see in the world to be destroyed. Some other games have used this as a pull but they way Red Faction does it isn’t just a simple texture swap; they have developed an engine which allow for physics to decide when a building will fall. This makes blowing things up very satisfying.
The world of Red Faction is a recently Teraformed Mars. You will notice right way some regions are just barely livable for humans while some other places are actually showing signs of life and greenery, but not much. For a game which focuses on destruction sometimes places with buildings are few and far between. In some cases you will be driving through a deserted Mars and sometimes not finding any buildings to blow up for a fair amount of time.
The main story missions are plenty with around 20 of them. But Red Faction also had side missions which are broken up into different types. There are ones such a bringing a vehicle from one place to another within a specific time limit but also some very fun ones like trying to figure out a way to take down a building in a certain amount of time using the weapons that your are given. Also ones where you ride around in a turret while the AI drives you and you have to destroy as much EDF property as you can. These side missions are scattered throughout the different regions and they give you salvage bonuses which you will use to upgrade and buy new weapons.
Weapons in the game vary from your trusty sledgehammer to some very spacey things like a Thermo-baric Rocket Launcher which will absolutely destroy anything that is in your way and an Arc Welder which will shoot electricity at your foes. All weapons can be upgraded which cool features and also extra ammo for them. One this you will be needing later in the game is the armor upgrades because about 3/4 of the way through the game gets less of just running and gunning (But not by much) and turns into get behind some cover because there are about 60 guys coming towards you and you will be dead in like 5 seconds. This makes the game less fun but it is not a game breaker.
After you are done with the single player Red Faction also has a bunch of multiplayer options for you to choose from. There offline game is called wrecking crew which has a variety of modes. The one we had most fun with is called Total Chaos, where you take turns destroying as much as you can in 1 minute. Wrecking Crew mode is very fun when you have a bunch of people over but unfortunately can only be played offline.
The online mode is Halo style match making with all of the modes you would expect. Deathmatch (Team also), Capture the Flag. But they also have some modes that take advantage of the destruction element. Those are Damage Control, Demolition and Siege. Damage Control has you getting points by destroying the point and reconstructing it with the Reconstrutor then the point will be yours, the longer you hold areas the more points you will get. Demolition a certain person is the destroyer and they have to take out a specific target, and in Siege you have multiple points that you have to defend or destroy and if you are on the defending side you can also use the Reconstructor to repair structures.
Another main part of the multiplayer is the backpacks you will be able to use. Backpacks range from a Jetpack like in the single player game but in the multiplayer you will also have some backpacks like the Tremor which will shake the ground around you, not only making it harder for enemies to shoot you but also destroying building around you and also the Rhino which is my personal favorite, it will let you charge through anything in your path for a brief period. These are just a few of the many backpacks you will use in the game.
Red Faction Guerrilla is a very fun game that will keep you entertained for many hours even past the initial single player campaign. Even through there are some issues and some blandness this game is defiantly worth your time.
