    Rei, has a special bond with both Gendo and Shinji Ikari. When Yui Ikari (wife of Gendo and mother of Shinji) died in a freak accident, Gendo managed to preserve her soul. Then, he combined it with the DNA of Lillith (the second angel) to create Rei.
