Resident Evil 5 follows series alum Chris Redfield as he journeys into West Africa with his new partner, Sheva Alomar, fighting Las Plagas-infested enemies called the Majini.
Do you think the game is racist?
It is a little odd that Sheva's most powerful weapon is a longbow. But not really racist just maybe a little stereotypical.
But I think that the fact that this takes place in Africa absolves the game of any racist accusations when it comes to the predominantly black enemy list, and the whole tribal garb that they wear partway through the game.
Now if this took place in L.A. or New York or some other American city where most of the enemies are black and wear grass skirts and throw spears. Then I'd say its racist.
Not really, although I was particularly amused that Capcom defended it's use of stereotypes by saying "hey people make fun of Asian stereotypes all the time!" If you visit japan, you can still buy products that have horribly racist logos and such right on the packaging, they are into the whole pickaninny racist caricatures. Essentially their defense is "we don't really have a lot of blacks in JPN so of course we have ridiculous stereotypes" pretty much ANY JPN game w/ black characters has them talking Jive, giant sized and loving guns or cars.
I don't think RE 5 is rasist for two reasons:
1) The game takes place in Africa.
2) The people you kill are not people anymore. They are technically, smarter zombies, and being white, black or blue, you shoot them to save your life.
Of course RE5 is racist and i'm sure capcom meant for it to be that way when they started developing the game. I just don't think they did enough to get there point across. Chris should have been screaming racial slurs the entire game with a shaved head and a swastika tattoo. Hopefully capcom corrects this with a patch soon.
Oh sure, these sad, pathetic people will claim racism while missing the true crime entirely. It's genocide of the zombies. If people would just stop feeding the zombies and stay out of their territory, we'd be fine. But, no, we put the zombies down the minute one of them tries to eat a living person. We need zombie reserves where they can roam free, or, more likely, wait by the fence for someone to get close enough.
All these racism cries prove is how much effort people will go through to try to get others to see the world through their twisted perspective.
Being racist implies that Capcom went out of their way to spread a message of hate and racial superiority; you'd have to be an idiot or have not seen anything of the game to think that. But is the game filled with imagery that could have been used centuries ago to justify Imperialism and Social Darwism? Yep.
"your in africa..."This ^
Nope
No stereotyping
No racist jokes
Main protagonist is not a white supremacist
Villainous white dude is main antagonist
Although the Africans were killed by that villainous white dude mentioned above, it shouldn't be considered a genocide as that dude is just trying to be a villain, not a racist
Sheva, a former African guirella and the another main protagonist of the game, learnt how to speak fluent English in a matter of months (a big attempt of further convincing us that they aren't racists)
You kill black-skinned zombie-like creatures in the game, not actual Africans
