They talked it up big and I've spent a bit of time with it, while I don't think it's as good as Res4's more fast paced version this one is decent. The ability's you can get really spice it up, like that they added in some weird things like the floating doll on the castle level.

The abilities you get definitely add some spice to a mode that I didn't really enjoy until this game but I feel like there was maybe a missed opportunity to maybe evolve the mode into the roguelike they were probably flirting with during development. I guess they didn't want to step on too many toes and kept the mode as it currently is and kept it faithful to the original modes, although I do miss having multiple playable characters.

I like it, but the difficulty spike in the final 4 levels is a bit silly. Those last 4 also force you to either use the starter pistol or rely on luck for knife perks which.... just sucks.

It feels a little more... sedate, than I remember Mercenaries in RE4.

Which is fine, there were some things I could never unlock because they were attached to maximum ranks in Mercenaries and I sucked at it. But it's definitely less frantic.

@sahalarious: I think you need to keep grinding until you know where all the enemies spawn.

I'm just at the start but I have I beaten two levels on A rank with the sniper rifle. It's the best to keep your combo going.

I've been maxing the second pistol out, kill enemy's so fast.
