Dead Nation Review

2
  • PS3N

Zombies or not, Housemarque's latest dual-joystick effort doesn't come close to fulfilling its potential.

This is atypically bright for Dead Nation.
This is atypically bright for Dead Nation.
Despite having a strong feeling that the zombie video game had already been more or less perfected over a year ago, I was ready to jump into and enjoy Housemarque's new dual-joystick PSN zombie shooter Dead Nation. After all, these are the guys behind Super Stardust HD. If anyone knows dual-joystick shooting, it's them, right? But Dead Nation's awkward mechanics and dim visual style feel at odds with the twitchy, fast-paced gameplay inherent to the genre, and the lackluster online mode leaves an awful lot to be desired too.

The disappointing part is that Dead Nation sounded like it should have been great. Your 15 bucks gets you 10 mildly story-driven levels full of monsters to shoot, and there's a light progression mechanic where your performance earns you gold that you can cash in to upgrade weapons ranging from a shotgun and rocket launcher to a flamethrower, blade-hurler, and electro-zap something or other. You can play those 10 levels by yourself, or with a friend in local or online co-op. Everyone with me so far?

The core problem is the way the game plays. From the get-go, Dead Nation's shooting felt off to me, and even as I upgraded my gear, it never got more enjoyable as the overly long campaign wore on. The camera is pulled further out from the action than I would have liked, making your targets small and relatively hard to aim at (especially since only the default rifle gets a laser sight). The aiming is a little squirrelly anyway, combining with the small targets to make the game feel less precise than the great dual-joystick shooters of the last few years. And that default rifle is the only gun with unlimited ammo, so you tend to rely on it a lot--but it's a single-shot-single-button-press weapon, so my index finger felt like it was just about ready to fall off by the end of the game.

The story between missions is paper-thin.
The story between missions is paper-thin.
Worse, none of the levels are what I would call "well-lit," and some areas are downright pitch black. You've got a flashlight that lets you see what's directly in front of you, but even in the best cases, there are often enemies coming right at you that you can barely see. Hiding the monsters and the scenery from you is a central tenet of the game's design, but dual-joystick shooters are all about brightly colored entities moving in obvious contrast to the background. That contrast is necessary so you can subconsciously track the objects moving around your peripheral vision, because everything is moving too fast for you to stop and scrutinize every entity directly. The action doesn't move any slower in Dead Nation than in other shooters; it's just harder to see.

If the core shooting was more fun to play, the relative lack of variety in Dead Nation's campaign levels would be easier to cope with. The vast majority of the game is composed of same-looking city streets and generic urban areas, with cars strewn all over the place. Admittedly, the cars have real strategic value since you can shoot them to set off their alarms, which attracts the horde until the car explodes, just like in Left 4 Dead. Actually, most of this game feels... just like Left 4 Dead. Among the zombie lineup there are direct equivalents of the boomer, spitter, and tank, and you'll find yourself in familiar locations like a hospital and a carnival, in the latter shooting zombie clowns. This stuff has been done before.

 ACK ZOMBIES
 ACK ZOMBIES
The game is more fun in two-player co-op than it is by yourself, largely because the level design and monster distribution make it really hard while you're playing solo to put your back against a wall and defend yourself without getting surrounded. With a friend onboard you can naturally watch each other's backs, making this a much less frequent occurrence. But you'd be best off playing with that friend on the couch with you. Getting into an online game isn't a problem, but when I played online, there was enough lag even as the host to make the game feel noticeably less responsive than it does offline. Also, when you're playing online, you can't talk to your partner because the game currently has no voice chat. Housemarque promises the feature will be along shortly in an upcoming patch, but for an online action game to ship without voice chat one month shy of 2011 is damn near unforgivable at this point.

At least Dead Nation looks great. That lighting that impacted the quality of the action for me does look nice and moody, and there are some great physics that send zombie bodies flying right at the camera when you set off a big explosion. But it doesn't matter how slick a game like this looks if the action isn't on point. Housemarque has proven in the past it clearly has the chops to make great shooters, but it doesn't feel like that skill was fully brought to bear on this one.

How much did he use items in the game? This isn't a straight up shooter, or dual stick shooter.

Item use in the single player game is how you stay alive and make it fun. Sections that would have been hell if it'd tried to play it like L4D or any other dual stick shooter were awesome because I made ample use of the items. Not to mention items are cheap.

I feel like Brad let his personal zombie fatigue cloud his judgement. ...Just putting that out there.

I really like it but I can totally see how someone like Brad disliking it. It got some weird design choices, some people just don't like dark games.

I think that if Vinny had reviewed this he would have given it around 4 stars. I can understand where Brad is coming from, but still... I don't necessarily agree with him. However, as Voltaire said; "I disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." :)

@Bucketdeth:
I can't really take that list seriously when they have websites such as "TotalPlaystation", "Playstation LifeStyle" and "PSX Extreme" on it. Maybe they just have weird names, but they all gave excellent reviews too. :P

This combined with Brad's quick look of Majin have me feeling like Brad needs a break from video games.
Just like Jeff near the time he left gamespot was, Brad has become more cynical and nit-picky than he needs to be. I am not saying the review is a bad one. I just think that he gets hung up on things he doesn't need to, and the game was deserving of one more star (even based on the text here, I think it could be given that one extra star).

Maybe I am just looking out for the smaller developers and sad that their game scored below 50%, but it is more to do with the conversation between Brad and Vinny on the Majin QL that sealed it for me. When asked what is wrong with the game, and why Brad was so down on it, he said "Nothing", only that it had that feel of being a budget title (giving more ammo to the CEOs who don't want greater diversity in pricing - another thing I am saddened by).

Brad, please take a break from playing games critically for a few weeks and go and play the games that you love (notice the s at the end of game, don't JUST play Starcraft 2).

Peace!

2 stars? A little bit strange for this one. Glad I chose guardian of light instead because that was one of the better games I've played in a long time. It totally surprised me.

Personally this game is a 5/5 for me. I don't understand or agree with Brad's critiques but that's his take on it. And everyone flipping their shit because Brad didn't like it and saying they're not going to buy it go read some other reviews. Brad is in the minority, the game is getting mostly positive reviews and is running a 79 on metacritic.  So all this purchased canceled lemming ass behavior in these comments needs to stop, the GB crew is great but make an informed decision for yourself.

I'm going to have to disagree with this review.

Yes, the aiming is a little squirly, I give you that. And yes, there's a noticeable lack of features when it comes to online (no voicechat and I haven't figured out how to invite friends - if you even can?).

However I'll have to disagree with the lighting. I find that the game is fairly well lit until it wants to get your blood pumping. Then it turns off all the lights and all you have is your flashlight, so you're constantly on the edge and you have to keep carefully track of your surroundings. It creates a great atmosphere in my opinion, especially when you consider that it's a top-down shooter. Also the level-up mechanic is great and it really makes you think if you should buy and extra grenade or more power for a gun.

Not to mention that the country-based competitiveness is something quite different and it makes me want to play more just so I can beat the other countries.

For $15 it a lot of fun and well worth the money if you ask me, and I'm not even a big zombie fan. Probably one of the better PSN games on the market.

I wasn't aware Giant Bomb had reviewed FFXIV? Regardless, reviews do not say "this game is as good/bad as these other games", they simply give the reviewer's opinion. Nothing more, nothing less.

Read through a bunch of comments and heres my personal take on this.

I respect Brad and the Giant Bomb crew regardless of their gaming  (360) preferences .  Everyone is entitled to their preference, and its human nature to have one. That being said, preference or not, if someone doesn't like something, they just don't like it.  There are those idiots out there that feel they need to shit on the thing they don't like to enjoy the thing they do like better.  Giant Bomb and its reviewers are not that. Brad felt what he felt and that is that.

If in todays information saturated society, if you only use one site (no offense GB) to determine the purchase of your games, your doing yourself a disservice.    There are many site out there, use em, form a consensus and know yourself, then make an informed decision.

Personally I'm enjoying the hell out of this game. I have been playing it a lot and find the sense of atmosphere (in no part through the use of brilliant lighting) very unnerving.  Hopefully this game does not get dismissed.

I totally get where Brad is coming from in his review, but some of the elements he didn't like I actually considered a great feature of the game.  The incredibly dim lighting where you can never quite see what is coming at you is actually a feature to me.  It keeps the suspense up and you never know when a zombie just going to jump out of the next shadow at you.  I'm not so sure I agree that a 'part of dual-joystick shooters' is the environments and enemies being brightly lit and colourful, that's the first time I've heard that actually.

I enjoyed the game, and I see where Brad draws his problems, but I also think he was maybe expecting a wee bit much.  Critiquing the story in a downloadable PSN title is probably setting your standards a bit high.  I don't begrudge him his opinion of course, I don't think he is wrong.  Just for my tastes I can't say I agree.

@Abyssfull: A lot of people get so upset when a game they like doesn't get the best ranking....based on gamerankings (the one that collects the ratings), this seems like a real love or hate game. I'll wait for a demo

Seriously people bitching about review scores, go back to fucking gamespot. Brad obviously does not give a fuck what you think about his score of a game. While you might not agree with him, you have to love the fact that if he didn't have a great experience with the game that he is willing to go against everyone and give a detailed explanation on why he did so. Good job Brad, keep it up.

Oh you're right. Brad should change his opinion to 3 stars because you and your friends like this more. "
I understand reviews are "opinions", so i agree with your sarcasm Yoshi. But I also agree with Bucketdeth, some games deserve a "minimum score" based on quality. Now I haven't played this game yet (only saw the quicklook), and this looks like the kinda game you can give it what you want to no strings attached. But as i said i think there ARE games out there; like Halo Reach or Starcarft, or Uncharted 2, that if you went to a site, and they gave it a 2/5 stars, then you legitimately could say "no, too many people like this game, it has perfected too much, its not a 2/5, your review is wrong". They deserve minimum of 3/5 just based on quality alone. But yeah Dead Nation is not that high caliber of a game. So Brad thinks its a 2/5, that's fine. He had his reasons. And now Bucketdeth you know to ignore all of his reviews in the future because you guys have different tastes :)

I had this reaction though when i played Enslaved, and saw it got a 7 in Gameinformer, but then saw the new Sonic side scrolling downloadable game got an 8. In no way is that basically remake Sonic game higher quality than Enslaved. But that's why i like Quick looks better than reviews, i want to see it played for myself not some other dudes opinion.

@acrimsonbullet:  Yeah I feel like they should speak their minds too, but only if you have good reasons. Most of his complaints are fucking stupid and because he sucks at the game. O no this game has a carnival it copied off of Left for Dead 2... please how many fucking games had carnivals before... O wait it probably didn't even start with games this game probably copied its' idea for a carnival from a black and white silent movie. Yeah and only 1 gun has infinite ammo Brad because it is called a fucking challenge this isn't some Elmo game where you skip through writing and reading words. How many guns had infinite ammo in Left for Dead wasn't it only the pistol? How many guns had infinite ammo in Resident evil none because it adds to the O Shit! factor because you can run out. So yeah I'm going to argue and say this guy is a fucktard so eat a dick! Not to drag anyone else into my argument, but I would have to agree with da5id this is the best 2-star game ever!

Finally, the "zomxploitation" genre is started to show it's true colors. Shoehorning zombies into movies and games isn't an appeal to nerds: It's a blatant attempt to separate gullible fools from their riches. Developers figure that game quality is irrelevant as long as the quantity of zombies is high.

The action does move slower in Dead Nation than in other twin stick shooters like Geometry Wars and Super Stardust HD.  Brad got that fact totally wrong.

So I played the shit out of this game at my friends house a couple weeks back, and I fucking absolutely loved the game. It was ridiculously fun and challenging, and incredibly tense but still extremely rewarding. I didn't have any issues with the lighting at all, and how quickly you upgrade weapons keeps the game constantly evolving.

Yes, I will be purchasing a PlayStation 3 just for this game.
