Saints Row: Gat out of Hell Review

3
  • XONE

The chaos and fun of Saints Row is fully intact in the underworld, but a new setting can only go so far.

Saints Row IV took the Third Street Saints to their inevitably insane conclusion. The franchise started as a more lighthearted GTA clone, found its wacky identity with the sequel, went further with dildo bats and celebrity cameos in 2011’s Saints Row: The Third, and threw superpowers in the mix two years later with the fourth entry. Fans started the series by drinking 40s to gain health, but by the end of IV they were controlling the President of the United States as he befriended Rowdy Roddy Piper and sprinted up the sides of skyscrapers. Going forward, Volition would have to amp up the craziness even more and freshen up the setting if they wanted to keep the franchise from going stale. They've done just that with Gat out of Hell, but it still fails to reinvigorate the series thanks to nearly identical gameplay.

Several new weapons fit the hell theme well.
Several new weapons fit the hell theme well.

Volition goes light on story in this stand-alone $20 title (which also comes included with the new Re-Elected edition), with only a handful of cutscenes propelling the action along. For the first time, you won’t be playing as the protagonist “boss” character,” as he or she has been sucked into hell via a magic Ouija board. Once there, Satan hatches his plan of marrying the boss to his daughter Jezebel, and it’s up to Johnny Gat and Kinzie to stop the unholy matrimony.

Rather than a traditional progression of missions, Gat out of Hell has players completing diversions and causing general chaos in an effort to raise the level of a meter called Satan’s Wrath. Once certain milestones are met on the meter, a cutscene is triggered. The game turns into a musical at times during these scenes, which didn’t do an awful lot for me.

While the storyline is a bit bare-bones, the game does include scaled-down versions of many of the franchise’s trademark features. An assortment of health, ammo, and damage bonuses can be purchased using currency earned by completing objectives and taking out enemies. This cash can also be used to upgrade your weapons, and Gat out of Hell introduces several unique ones based on the seven deadly sins. One of my favorites was the greed weapon that shoots diamonds and rewards you with currency, and another was a recliner (representing sloth) that shoots miniguns and missiles.

Superpowers return from IV, and they’re upgraded by collecting orbs that float around hell. Most are repeats (blast, stomp, aura) with some new elemental powers, but summon is exclusive to Gat out of Hell. Depending on which variant you use, it allows you to recruit imps to your side, make towers explode out of the ground, or produce a giant demonic ally.

Everything leads towards a final confrontation with Satan.
Everything leads towards a final confrontation with Satan.

For all of the elements that are successfully brought over from the game's full retail predecessors, there are several long-established features that are missing. Since you’re playing as either Gat or Kinzie, you don’t have any wiggle room when it comes to your character’s appearance. This extends beyond your face and physical build, as the myriad clothing stores and options from the past are nowhere to be found in hell. One of my favorite things about previous games (The Third in particular) was the ability to pull out an in-game cell phone and have one of your fellow Saints deliver vehicles to you. This isn’t an option in Gat out of Hell, but it’s not a terrible loss considering there’s no real reason to drive around since it’s so easy to sprout demon wings and fly across the underworld. Other omissions are made, such as the ability to upgrade a home base or switch between radio stations, but I wasn’t particularly surprised considering the smaller scope of the game.

One of the more concerning elements of Gat out of Hell is a variety of technical issues. I played on the Xbox One, and the framerate would frequently drop if I was flying around while there was a lot of activity on the screen. In addition, it’s not uncommon to see awkward animation glitches and collision detection issues. On one occasion, the game suffered from a hard lock and I had to restart the system.

Collecting orbs, leveling up your character, and being surrounded by Saints Row’s brand of wackiness is still a lot of fun, even if Gat out of Hell doesn’t live up to the experience of the full games. On the surface, it seems like it might have a wider variety of activities than it does, as early missions have you hunting down characters like Vlad the Impaler, Shakespeare, and Blackbeard in an effort to make them join your fight. Once you’ve met them, however, their “missions” are simply a collection of diversions that are already found in the open world. These are still fun to do, but I would have liked a little more in the way of traditional story missions.

Gat out of Hell isn’t particularly long, as the core story can be completed in about two hours. I continued playing after the credits rolled and am currently at the seven hour mark with a 92% completion rate, but you probably won’t have much of a reason to put that much time in if you don’t have a high tolerance for flying around and collecting hundreds of orbs. If you’re looking for a new collection of Saints Row activities in a new setting, Gat out of Hell is just that, so it can be enjoyed if you go in without expecting a significant upgrade to what’s been seen numerous times before in the series.

Yeah, no thanks. I really need missions to enjoy my Saint's Row 4, and the setting here isn't nearly as relatable. Also - no dubstep radio station is a big turnoff.

Saints Row 3 and 4 had the most boring, drab city and I didn't care about them because of it... this looks even worse...

I kinda don't care about the lack of customisabilty, as I usually just buy one outfit pretty early on and stick with it for the whole game. It's a fun, goofy feature in full Saints Row games, but it's not the biggest loss in the world, especially when this game already takes place in hell. Like, if I ran around in a gaudy outfit, would it even be as funny when instead of being surrounded by regular citizens I'm just surrounded by the damned?

Anyway, the length of this standalone thing seems like a real concern. Cool add-on if you already feel the need to buy the Re-Elected edition, but buying this as a standalone thing seems like it's maybe not worth it.

I bought four on a Steam sale along with three, and got through three, but I just got tired of four and didn't finish it, but more so due to not being able to run it on highest settings than it not being fun.

I'm excited to go back to that world. Even better if GameSpot delivers on these $5 codes but I'd probably still have gone for it even at $20. I'm a huge fan of 3 and 4 though so of course I'm down.

Deep Silver should really let them rest the franchise now. Or at least give them time to build something new out of it. I'd probably still be up for a Saints In Time.

I believe it was Ryan on the bombcast years ago who, in trying to explain the unexpected and wonderful madness of SR the 3rd, said, "It's basically like a glimpse into Dan Ryckert's head". Having Dan as part of the site now has only made that make more and more sense. But it also makes this review that much more disappointing.

That game was a revelation, and I still enjoyed the 4th entry, but it's becoming painfully clear that those once visionaries are kind of spinning their wheels.

Maybe they need to cut the franchise ties and try a new IP? Whatever it is, I hope they can somehow regain some of that SR3 magic, instead of just reskinning that game ad nauseum.

Holy hell, I could not agree more. The story in the second one was excellent and the cooperative game play was amazing. Must have played through it three times with a friend and spent hundreds of hours in it. There was nothing quite as amazing as having Warf find out that he had just crushed his own girlfriend in a monster truck rally. That game was amazing. Subsequent games removed the crazy physics that made the second one so much fun and the story was too silly whereas the second one was silly but still slightly grounded. The fourth game was too much Crackdown which meant that cooperative play was almost impossible since means of travel were so varied and fast that I was rarely with my partner. Oh well, here's to Saints Row 2, quite possibly my favorite game of last generation.

Yes.

Also, it's insane to me that they don't allow you to customise Gat or Kinzie's appearance in any way. Like, having you play as pre-determined character is one thing, and is also somewhat novel, but no clothing options? Not even full-dress outfits? In a series that prides itself on its character customisation??

What the Hell. (pun)

Considering that this was offloaded onto a secondary developer for the most part and never promised to be anything more than a standalone expansion, this could have been much worse. I'm still looking forward to another fun filled day playing Saint's Row, and I hope that Volition is focused on bringing us a new adventure at this very moment.

The PC version was $5 a few days ago on sale, its back to $20 now but at that price point your complaints are more nitpicky than deal breakers. If viewed as dlc or expansion I feel like its a lot of content.

Eh, I'll pay something less than that when it inevitably comes down in price. Lack of story content makes me lack all interest in this game as the side-quests are not why I play Saints Row.

@lacerta_3:

1) MSRP is a fair game. It's what they want for the game so it's fair to judge the product based on that.

2) Sites like G2A are key resellers, which are of dubious legality.

3) I ordered it for $4.99 from Gamestop but the region locking Deep Silver employs might still screw me over.

Got 2 and 3 sitting on my PS3 waiting to be played. The PS4/XBone version seems like an okay deal if you missed the previous release, but if rather buy Sleeping Dogs on a bargain if I'm going for this type of game. (Fully admitting that by SR4, they went full nutjob, so they're not really equivalent any more.)

Nope, can't get into any more SRIII sequels. Maybe it's just confirmation bias, but I didn't see anything compelling in the quicklook that makes me want to buy this game at any price higher than $5.

@overbite: With you 100%, SR2 was better than 3+ in nearly every way except pc port quality.

It would be cool if someday I could play a saints row as good as 2 that's actually about gangs, I've replayed 2 too many times for it to have the same impact as the first time.

I fucking adored SR3, and loved SR4 to a slightly lesser degree, but I think I'm done with the current Saints Row formula. As a result, I think I'll pass on this.

I'd love to play a Saints Row 5, but only if they really revisit the core of these games. More faffing about with super powers and compounding wackiness is not what I'm looking for.

Reboot the series with the Saints protagonist and a mostly-new cast of characters, a new visual engine (the current one runs like crap everywhere but PC), and do what you can to ground it back in reality a bit. Saints Row 4 is the kind of completely unleashed insanity you can only do once, before you have to take some steps backward again and reload (or move the series to a whole new genre).

You don't have to abandon the fantastic humour, obscure references, and generally cartoony reality that made SR3 such a breakout game. However, please do abandon Johnny Gat. Bringing him back was a terrible mistake. He's just not a great character; as Jeff said in the QL, the Saints boss essentially stole his gig in SR3 and 4.

Also, please do abandon the superpowers. They were fun while they lasted, but they also turned the city into sort of irrelevant window dressing you rocketed past in 2 seconds, at 20 FPS. I'd like to see a city with more life breathed into it, as a more immersive backdrop for Saints Row craziness. You could even add jetpacks, or an Iron Man-style suit, or whatever.

That's unfortunate. I can understand being a little burned out, but SR4 has some truly incredible story stuff that makes the campaign worth seeing to the end, even if you don't do anything else.

I guess everyone was expecting some kind of glorious opus then? Not sure if your expectations and/or your hopes are to high, but, come on people, it's a Saints Row game: Insanity comes standard. Even SR2, a game people claim to be so much more grounded, still had wacky nonsense in it from time to time.

Now then, after all that defense of the last few SR games...I'm gonna pass on this till it hits a steam sale. Personally it looked worth it, but there's just so little time after the dreaded 2014 backlog.

@ripelivejam: Even with decent hardware, settings on medium and the fan patch installed Saint's Row 2 judders really badly any time you drive a car. I think it crashed a few times too. I managed to get from beginning to end though and really enjoyed it, but it's probably better played on consoles if at all possible.

Even with the PC ports multitude of problems I still enjoyed it much more than 3 or 4. It was funny without being totally off the wall 'look at me' zany, and the story and characters were easier to care about because they weren't quite so ridiculous.
