First launched on September 1, 2006, Roblox began as a sandbox game of sorts, though over time it has leaned more into being a bespoke platform for user-generated "experiences" (formerly known as games) in Roblox's original engine.
Roblox's features are split between two different programs (Roblox Studio and Roblox Player). Roblox Studio is the interface for Roblox's LUA-based engine, through which users create content for the game. Once content is published, Roblox Player allows users to play said content, alongside using other features of the overall game.
Since launch, Roblox's engine and Roblox Studio have received a number of updates to increase most of the engine's capabilities, with modern versions of the engine arguably being on par with competing game engines such as Unity.
Additionally, Roblox's playerbase has increased significantly since 2006, often reaching multi-million concurrent players. Some individual experiences within Roblox have even managed to have over a million players at once, and the most popular experiences typically have 10s of billions of lifetime visits.
At launch, Roblox operated via an installation and the player's standalone web browser. Players would use the browser to manage user profiles, design avatars, and browse available games. Once they found a game to play, the Roblox Player would launch into that game.
Nowadays, the former functions of a user's web browser have all been implemented into the Roblox Player, minimizing the role of a standalone web browser.
Beyond that, Roblox's moment-to-moment gameplay varies extremely depending on the experiences a user chooses to play.
While hypothetically anything can be made in Roblox, a number of genres have proven particularly popular. Among these are:
While countless experiences of these types and more can be found on Roblox, a number of experiences have gained significant prominence on the platform, developing considerable playerbases of their own. For example:
A competitive fashion experience, wherein players are given six minutes to put together the best look within a theme, and then vote on one another's picks. After each round players pick the next theme and are awarded in-game currency depending on their performance in the previous round.
Roblox's most visited experience of all time, with 65 bilion life-time visits as of May 2025.
An open-ended roleplaying experience set in a modern city, with various jobs for players to choose from.
A naval PvPvE RPG heavily inspired by One Piece (Franchise). Splitting into two teams, Marines and Pirates, players level up, obtain new equipment, and fight one another or computer bosses in super-powered combat.
A horror experience pitting players against hostile cartoons as they try to make their way through an abandoned museum.
Taking inspiration from Epic Mickey and Dead by Daylight (Game), players choose one of several playable "toons", each with their own abilities. Solo or in a group, players have to avoid hostile versions of the various toons, each with unique abilities, while working on machines positioned around each floor to progress.
An experience about obtaining animal eggs of different rarities and raising them. Once raised, players can trade animals with one another for other animals or different in-game items, such as vehicles and clothing for pets.
A co-operative pizzeria simulator, initially released in 2008 and still ongoing.
Players are given one of six roles: Manager, Cashier, Cook, Pizza Boxer, Delivery, and Supplier. Performance at a given role gives players in-game currency with which to purchase and upgrade a house and obtain various items.
At launch, Roblox had no economic features. However, in 2007 Roblox was updated to introduce two currencies: freely obtainable Tickets (or "Tix"), and premium "Robux". The two currencies were used to buy cosmetic items and advertise a user's games, although Tix were limited in which cosmetic items they could purchase. In 2016, Tix were removed, making Robux the prevailing currency.
Also introduced in 2007 was Builder's Club, a premium subscription system offering cosmetic items and a daily allowance of Robux, although this system was discontinued in 2019. In it's stead, a system named Roblox Premium was introduced, offering users a monthly Robux allowance, a discount on Robux purchases, the ability to trade items, and a special icon in-game.
As the game's only currency, Robux are the medium through which all in-game transactions occur, whether a user is buying cosmetics from Roblox's avatar shop, paying to advertise their experience, or purchasing in-game microtransactions designed by a given experience's creator.
Helped by its significant popularity, Roblox's economy is one of the most profitable in the games industry, with Fourth Quarter revenue of almost $1 billion USD reported in 2024.
