Overview
Rockpool Games was a former British developer subsidiary of Eidos Ltd that specialized in mobile and causal games. The studio was shuttered by Eidos in early 2009 along with Morpheme Wireless as part of a cost cutting move.
History
Rockpool games was a former independent mobile phone games developer consisting of three companies Rockpool games, Ironstone Partners and SoGoPla. The team was founded in 2002 by Paul Gouge and was primarily populated by members of the former Software Creations developer, including Lorraine Starr (now of Yippee entertainment).
The company, as many mobile phone developers are apt to do, developed dozens of games in a short amount of time. They also owned and created their own proprietary software tech they called Coral Build Technology.
Rockpool frequently created mobile phone adaptions for well known console franchises, including Worms, MotoGP, Toca Race Driver , Dr. Who and games based off famous snooker player Ronnie O'Sullivan. Rockpool worked with many larger companies including THQ Wireless, Sorrent, mFORMA, Siemens Mobile and SEGA.
Their Ironstone Partners division was a licensing company which specialized in owning and acquiring a portfolio of Intellectual Property Rights. SoGoPlay was a developer and publisher of games for the casual gaming market through it's own browser based portal.
Eidos Acquitision
In February 2007 they were acquired by Eidos for a undisclosed amount (including a 1.2 million pound down-payment) and assigned to the Edios New Media division.
At Eidos they were part of the development team that produced the Top Trumps: Dr Who game for Playstation 2 and Nintendo DS.
They shuttered shortly (in January 2009) thereafter due to their parent's financial trouble that eventually lead the parent to being acquired by Square Enix.
