I was just thinking about how excited I am for Watch Dogs and then I got to thinking about GTA V. I'm excited for Whore of the Orient, the new Red Dead, Agent (if that's even a thing) and I was thinking that Watch Dogs will be my big time-suck open world game. No matter how epic GTA can get, it's still kind of obtuse isn't it? I mean, maybe I'm wrong, but I can only skip so many RPGs into an intersection before I go "Okay, I want something else".

At what point will GTA stop being such a huge deal, and how? Or can it stay alive? I just think it's needs something else. I truly think that GTA III, Vice City, and GTA IV are near-perfect games and absolute gaming experiences, but what is going to put GTA V on par? It's a great game, but it's always sort of the same to me.

    Just wonderin'.

I think GTA V will be big. I don't think it will be as mind-blowing as IV was, what with it being the same generation, but I would put money on it blowing every open-world game made since RDR clear out of the water. I expect a fantastic game, but not a revolutionary one.

Grand Theft Auto will never stop being a big thing because Rockstar is simply the indisputable master of crafting a contemporary satirical open world experience that sucks you in almost literally because of how true-to-life it is.

Rockstar is GTA, GTA is Rockstar, and I love both of them :D

GTA V and the franchise on general will always be big, people love the games, the stories are usually really good, memorable characters, and years I between releases. Its how Rockstar works and I love them for it. Watch Dogs did look great but as usual the story will probably be lack luster and its ubisoft so probably end up a yearly franchise if the first one is mildly successful

Anyways, it'll always appeal to everyone just because you can kill millions of civilians, it has guns and the stories are always great. That's all it needs to sell millions of copies.

I hope your not implying that Assassin's Creed has a lackluster story. I doubt this would happen it'll be a yearly franchise too. Brotherhood and Revelations are more like yearly expansions, yeah, but they were also like tests. See what things could fit into their biggest AC title yet, AC3. Like multiplayer, having a brotherhood of assassin's to do all the stuff they do, and whatever other jazz they had in them. Also, people wanted more Ezio and giving him a story arc instead of making him into one game and he was finished was a better idea. Besides AC, I don't see what other franchises are yearly. Splinter Cell, Rainbow 6, Ghost Recon, H.A.W.X. and Prince of Persia are years apart. Rayman just got back into the game which is a great game but is selling terribly. Brother in Arms has been dormant for a while.

    So yeah.

It wasn't either of those. At the time it was amazing. A couple years later we can see what they could have done better, but only because other games showed us.

And I still can't think of many games that have a better feeling city.

But it wasn't....at all. Maybe you couldn't blow shit up with a tank or engage in some of the craziness found in other open world games, but that game stuck with me where I mostly just discard others as frivolous entertainment. And man, that ending was fucking great.

Rockstar are innovative I respect them there one of the only few devs out there that hasn't dumb down there games. I'm really looking forward to GTA5 it will be awesome to be back in San Andreas again. I would like though to see another Manhunt game in the future.

Not really, since GTA IV is one of the few truly mindblowing and unprecedented games in recent memory. Thanks to that game, games like Saints Row 2, Saints Row 3, Red Dead Redemption and Sleeping Dogs exist. And even though they came out a few years after, aside from their better graphics, occasional better dialogue and more fast paced parkour-ish styles, they still couldn't even be in the same league with IV's masterful ability to present a real living breathing 21st century world.

That shit was a high production masterpiece.

You cant argue if it was or not a let down. especially when so many people were turned off by how realistic it was trying to be.

That doesn't mean it was horrible, at all.

Er, actually, you can thank Saints Row existing as a whole thanks to San Andreas, not Grand Theft Auto IV, and you can thank the recent Batman titles for Sleeping Dogs, not Grand Theft Auto IV. You like to throw around this term "masterful" for reasons that are just baffling. As far as I'm concerned, Grad Theft Auto IV just tripped it's way through the story, characters and especially the gameplay. It's fine if you enjoyed it and had fun with it, but masterful? Not even close.

Call Of Duty pumps out the same game every year. I'm thinking R* has nothing to worry about, at least not for a while yet.

I liked the more serious real world tone of Gta4 and hope that it continues. I think if they do, there are plenty of cool crime stories to be told.

    In the ground...after I kill it...MWUAHAHAHAHAHA!

To tell the truth, I haven't really enjoyed a GTA game all that much since the days of III and Vice City when it was all about blowing shit up, killing tons of people, and surviving for as long as you could. I don't think I ever finished more than a few missions in either of those games because that simply wasn't the point for my friends and I. Since then, it's basically been the same old shit to me. Yeah, there's a different world and story, but it kind of just feels the same because none of that stuff has ever really been that important to me in GTA.

It's probably also my problem with those kinds of open world games in general where I feel like 60-80% of the content in games like that is just filler bull shit side missions that are never ever fun. It's something Red Dead solved in my eyes, because it made the entire world feel more alive and realistic than most other games like that. The side missions didn't feel simply like another point on the map, but rather a real thing in the world that you actually stumbled upon and wanted to do because it felt more organic instead of forced.

All that being said, I enjoyed Saints Row the Third too. The only difference is that game was awesome because it was crazy, and I didn't bother to do any of the side stuff in that game either.

I think he throws out the term masterful specifically because he believes the game to be such. Not really that baffling when you think about it.

The mechanics of the game were never great to begin with and they've aged even worse, but I think the game is still has one of, if not the best, writing in a video game.

The ending is still one of the most powerful moments in a video game- thefact that regardless of the decision Niko makes he loses something close to him is ballsy and poignant.

On top of that the game does an excellent job of giving you a critical look at the American dream an the immigrant experience. The ending really drives that point home through the endings-- if Niko spares Dimitri and decides to move on he loses his cousin, his tie to his roots, or he kills dimitri and loses Kate, his only hope f

    Dumb phone...

For a change from the past.

So an immigrant either has to sacrifice their culture and past to assimilate, or they hold on to their past with no hope of finding a future.

The game is much better written then you give it credit for.

I loved it anyway. But my rambling probably gave that away.

While I agree with everything you said and everybody knows Rockstar crafts tangible experiences that raise the bar time and time again, I am in fact a gameplay fiend and I wouldn't hold IV in such a high regard if it failed to deliver on the most important aspect of a game - gameplay.

So do tell, why do you think the mechanics were not great? I've beaten the game four times, last time was one year ago, and I think that not only does it hold up well, it was extremely dynamic and satisfying under my fingertips since launch day.

I want Rockstar to work on a new IP, it a genre they have yet to tackle, because that would be interesting if nothing else.. Rockstar introduces new technology and ways to interact with the game in each new game so I think if they keep at that they stay relevant..

As much as I love GTA, I think Red Dead Redemption was the 'mecca' of Rockstar releases. Nothing before or since(so far) has come close to it

I agree with this.. I just wish Red Dead's middle to late game was as good as it's beginning.. Armadillo is the best part of that game

GTA IV was alright, I'm just sorry that they made the Niko's past so vague. I mean the goal of the game is being a mass murderer and hardened criminal, and yet Rockstar is worried about controversy that would result from saying that Niko is Serbian or Croatian or Montenegrin. It would only cause controversy in the Balkans anyway, and any mention of any other country here causes it. Regardless San Andreas was the best, it was such a huge game with so much to do. GTA IV felt like a step back in many ways, I'm hoping to see more features added in GTA V.

Anyway GTA and Manhunt are the games I think of when I hear Rockstar. When it comes to violence Rockstar makes the lurking homicidal maniac in all of us happy, and so I only see big things in Rockstar's future.

    This is legitimately hilarious.

I don't think it's abysmal or anything, but the character control is a little floaty, the cover system isn't very good, the aiming is jittery (on consoles anyway) -- mostly small annoyances that make playing the game not great.

I have no major issues with the controls really but objectively speaking other 3rd person shooters have come on the scene and improved on those mechanics since then.

Yeah, Mexico wasn't my favorite, but I thoroughly enjoyed it once you get to Blackwater

@AlfredCapone: Rickets and the song when you first enter Mexico are two of the strongest things about that game, but none of the other characters of arc's of Mexico stood up against armadillo and the endgame stuff.. Although I still kinda wished just most of the game being around the Armadillo/ Classic Western era stuff.. I felt using the guns in Blackwater a little out of place and contrived

For me personally, I don't think Rockstar will ever hit that magic spot they did for San Andreas again. Maybe RDR2--the first one actually hit that magic for me I suppose.
