Rogue Legacy or: How I Learned to Kill an Entire Lineage
Rogue Legacy, much like Spelunky before it, is a procedurally generated roguelike platformer. Where both games involve exploring randomly generated levels and collecting loot, this is about where the similarities end.
My thoughts on this game are similar to Spelunky. This game is going to kill you, in fact you are probably going to die A LOT, you will see generations upon generations of your offspring attempt to unlock the secrets of Castle Hamson. But systematically leading generations of characters to their doom has never managed to be so fun.
I enjoy that all of the unique areas are available from the start of the game, and that you don't have to "finish" one area before you can go on to the next. If you were to stumble in to a higher level part of the castle, you could theoretically kill the enemies you encounter and the eventual boss for that part of the castle, and while I wouldn't recommend doing this, the fact that you can is a nice option.
The added gameplay mechanics of upgrading your characters classes, atributes and equipment offer up more depth then Spelunky does, and it gives you a bit more of a goal to work towards. If I know that I need a certain amount of gold to get that sweet rune or sword, it makes you try just a little bit harder to try and push through and collect more loot.
Perhaps the best thing about this game though is that it doesn't seem to take itself too seriously. Some of the attributes your characters can get will have legitimate useful purposes, but some such as baldness or Irritable Bowl Syndrome are added just for flavor and humorous effect, and lets face it who doesn't like it when their hero is running along, sword held high, randomly farts when he or she jumps.
I am fond of this game because it can fit in to almost anyone's gaming schedule. If you need something you can play for a few minutes before you go to work, or something to play for a few hours on the weekend, you can accomplish both of these with Rogue Legacy. Its simple to pick up and play, and quit whenever you need to.
If you are looking for what may be the best platformer available right now, dig our your wallet and start throwing money at your screen until the game appears on your computer, you can thank me later.
