Japanese magazine Famitsu is reporting that development on a “massive, original action role-playing game" is underway at Square, using Epic’s Unreal Engine 3.
According to Andriasang, Dragon Quest 9 producer Ryutaro Ichimura is in charge of the project. It’s set for consoles, with 35 staff members working on the title already. Square are eyeing up the possibility of a next-gen release. No specific platforms have been mentioned as yet.
The magazine revealed concept art for the project. Apparently, Ichimura researched the game for two years, travelling the world to conduct surveys to scope out art and gameplay possibilities. Now he’s back and he’s getting stuck into development.
A formal announcement of the game, which has been confirmed not to belong to the Final Fantasy or Dragon Quest series, is expected next week.
This is great news, and I really hope we'll see more info about this in the near future. I loved DQ on the PS2, but haven't really played any of the newer games since I don't own a handheld. Curious to see if this is indeed for "next-gen" or current X360/PS3.
