Playing Saints Row 3 without playing other two?
Hey animalfather, we missed you bro, where have you been? xoxoxo
Yes, play SR3 without playing the first two, a lot of people are doing that.
Honestly, there's not enough of a story for it to even matter. Plus, this game seems like it has a bit more polish than the first two. So I really wouldn't bother with them.
The Saints Row games actually have a much deeper story than people give them credit for. The first one especially had a pretty dramatic plot twist at the end that directly set up the events of the second.
With the third game, they seem to be trying their hardest to ignore the story and make it seem as silly as possible, but that's likely just the marketing and it is worth pointing out that the last piece of DLC for Saints Row 2 also set up the events for SR3. It's not important if you just want a sandbox game to mess around in, but if you do care about the story in games, it might be worth going back and playing through them. Or at least watching the cut-scenes on youtube.
After listening to the latest bombcast it sounds like you'll be just fine! I'm going in fresh myself.

does it have more story than crackdown? and do you play as the same character through all games?
Yes and yes.
You will not be caught up in the deep emotional storyline that will reach its thrilling conclusion with this upcoming game.
You are the same character, yes, though you could only play a male in the first one, so if you choose a female in the second or third, you are transgendered.
I played the second one without playing the first, and while I did feel there were a couple things I was missing, the story basically boils down to, "There are some motherfuckers out there that think they're the baddest motherfuckers on the block, now go shoot them."
Here's the ending to SR1 (which obviously has some pretty big spoilers) but should give an idea of how much story is actually there. Pay attention to what the other characters (your fellow Saints gang members) are doing, as the implications were very important going into the second game, and weren't properly explained until then. Again, I'd have to say the game has a lot more story and subtler points that people seem to ignore, which is a shame.

are you refered to as a transgendered? blah.
No, you had to play as a male in the first game, but if you choose female at the beginning of the second, nobody takes any notice, they act as if you were always female. The only kind of reference to your character being different is several characters asking "did you do something with your hair?".
I never played the first before the second and I didnt feel for one second I was missing anything. I'm sure it will be the same with the third.
i think this game looks awesome i think its gonna be off the hook. if it as crazy as it seems and as diverse then wow.
Saints Row : The Third requires the user submit a dissertation on the ongoing effects of Purple and its allusions to power and sexuality in world of video game fiction specially relating to three pillars of gangsta rap; gun, bitches and bling. If you can't answer this you will not be allowed to unlock the game's main menu.

Saints Row 2 is still simply a brilliant game that's worth playing through anyway, regardless of the ever looming sequel.

I think usually there needs to be a story in order for there to be spoilers. Don't play SR 1 or 2...you aren't missing anything. In fact, if you want my opinion, you'd be better off skipping SR ""the third" (yech) as well, especially if storytelling is something that you value in your games.

You have no idea what you're talking about.
Just saying.

You haven't played any of the games. Clearly.

Gameplay comes first and foremost. Story is completely irrelevant.
@phish09: It sounds like you're basing your whole opinion of the series on the marketing ads.
Remember how EA advertised Dragon Age Origins by showing nothing but action scenes, with lots of blood and death metal playing over it? Yeah. Saint's Row is a pretty silly series, but there is also a story there. Perhaps not the best ever, but it's decently good if you care about these things in games and at least on par with the PS2 era GTA games.
@SeriouslyNow: That was #2 this is #3 They are differentBut there will still totally be guns, bitches, and bling in The Third.

I guess it depends on what you are going into the game expecting. I consider story to be very relevant in some games (Heavy Rain, Planescape: Torment, etc) and completely irrelevant in others (pacman, Super Mario Brothers, etc). This guy made this thread to ask about the story in these games, so I guess to him it is relevant, even if it's not to you.

So you actually think the Saint's Row series has a good storyline?

I played SR2, so obviously you have no idea what you are talking about.
God dammit...why do you kids take every comment about every game you like to heart so much. Did you write the story for the Saints Row games? No? Then why be offended if someone thinks they are trite? Oh to still have those little immature things to get upset about...must be nice.

True. If he's worried about it he should look up some synopses of the first two games and see if those stories appeal to him or if it won't matter at all.

@phish09: You're like that movie snob who only watches black-and-white films.
And you're like that kid that only watches Transformers movies.
Why exactly? Your post was clearly a middle finger aimed at anyone who happen to enjoy the dumb fun that is Saints Row. I can agree that the story shouldn't be the reason why someone gets Saints Row but just bashing it because of that is just dumb (hence my comparison to movie snob). If you're playing games just for the stories you chose the wrong medium, go read a book or something.
From what I saw, the first game took itself kind of seriously. They tried to fill the void before an actual next-gen GTA came out.
The second one actually started to take itself as a joke. It made fun of how serious and gritty GTA was and added a bunch of minigames to the mix. I liked it, though I only played about 3 hours into it before I forgot about it.
The third seems to actually be bat shit insane in just about every regard and finding its own identity. I'd say skip the first two, they aren't extremely important.
AND OMG THAT BROTHERHOOD ARC IN SR2 WAS LIKE SO SUPER SAD AND SHIT AND MADE ME FEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEL@phish09: It sounds like you're basing your whole opinion of the series on the marketing ads.

I'm being serious, btw. That stuff was brilliant; the entire arc had some genuinely fantastic moments in it - speaking as a dumb, action orientated storyline of course, which is what it totally is. A damn good one, though, is what's most important to point out.

It's not even a videogame thing. I just hate judgement assholes, that say bullshit about things they know nothing about. Sorry your such a joyless shell of a person, enjoy cutting yourself.
