2010 World Series Champs
Trades, Pickups and Transactions
The Giants made some very key signings and last minute pickups during the season, most notable were the signings of Aubrey Huff, Pat Burrell, Cody Ross and relievers Javier Lopez and Ramon Ramirez. San Francisco also made a mid-season trade for catcher Bengie Molina making rookie Buster Posey the new catcher.
Padres' Regular Season Collapse
The Giants made the post season after an unlikely collapse from the San Diego Padres, losing 10 games starting on August 25th and continued through September, who were the division leader. The 6 game lead in the division quickly disappeared and the Giants moved to first place on September 5th beating the Padres. The Giants pitching staff ERA became one of the best in the league at 1.78 and they finally clinched the division against the Padres on their final regular season game winning 3-0.
National League Divisional Series
The San Francisco Giants played the wildcard Atlanta Braves in a best of 5 series. The Giants won the series 3 games to 1 and was most notable for the errors caused by Brooks Conrad in game 3.
National League Championship Series
Next up for the Giants were the Philadelphia Phillies who were the clear favorites and had appeared last year's postseason and won a World Series in 2008. San Francisco won the best of 7 series 4 games to 2 and beat the Phils in Philadelphia in game 6. Late season pickup Cody Ross was named series MVP after he got the hot bat and hit 3 homeruns off of Roy Halladay and Roy Oswalt in Games 1 and 2 as well as hitting 3 doubles.
World Series
San Francisco's next opponent were the red hot Texas Rangers who bested the New York Yankees. The Giants pitching limited the Rangers offense to 26 hits while the Giants scored 26 runs. Veteran Edgar Renteria was named series MVP with a home run and 2 RBI in Game 2 and hitting a three run home run against Cliff Lee making him one of four players in MLB World series history to have 2 game winning runs. The Giants 56 year long drought without a World Series title has finally ended with their first championship in San Francisco.
