    Overview

Sanctuary Hills is a suburb of Boston in The Commonwealth, where the Sole Survivor lived with their family before the Great War. The suburb was a quintessential neighborhood, filled with friendly families who each lived in a "House of Tomorrow".

On Saturday, October 23, 2077 - the day of the Great War - the neighborhood was hit within the blast radius of a nuclear bomb, which hit southwest of urban Boston. The residents who did not make it to Vault 111 were killed instantly from the blast and the houses either severely damaged or destroyed entirely.

When the Sole Survivor wakes up - in the year 2287 - from cryosleep and escapes Vault 111, they find that the only remaining resident of Sanctuary Hills is Codsworth, their family's Mr. Handy robot butler from before the war.

    Settlement

When the Sole Survivor leads the Minutemen to Sanctuary Hills, one of the members asks them to build basic necessities for the group. This leads the player to be able to build a permanent settlement, called "Sanctuary", for the group and any other travelers who visit. Using raw resources from scrapping the neighborhood homes - as well as objects from the surrounding world - to construct buildings, furniture, and other fixtures.
