Iwata did excellent things for games, but he also struck me as a kind, friendly dude. Time to read up on some Iwata Asks that I missed.

This is definitely not the kind of news that you expect to see at 7pm on a Sunday night. So out of nowhere, but that's how death is, right?

Iwata, you helped nurse and grow a company into something incredible. Good job, man. Take your rest now and enjoy that void in space.

Iwata made Nintendo relevant again in a lot of ways. He will be missed.

He looked so healthy and young for 55. I can't say I saw this coming at all. Must be quite the shock to his family, my heart goes out to them.

I'll be glad to save you some time. I have not been the least bit satisfied with Nintendo's output over the last several years. That doesn't have a damn thing to do with feeling some sadness over the passing of a guy who has been a fixture in gaming since right around the time I started playing them in the mid 80s.

I hope to see a tribute to him in an upcoming release from Nintendo, the puppet bits from the direct were my favorite things from the presser's this year

Really sad to hear, didn't even know he had cancer. Remember hearing he was ill or sick last year (year before?).

Regardless my thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

The world needs more presidential figure heads akin to Mr. Iwata. It's a great loss in deed and my thoughts go out those close to him. Safe travels Iwata-kun and I positively hope you will find that the after life does what nintendon't... which is a lot... K, bye!

I'm shocked. Iwata's persevering public presence made me think he was just having spots of poor health, rather than something fatal.

Now... Satoru Iwata, I truly believe that you're a gaming luminary, and I'll miss your presence a lot. You've made the gaming industry a better place, and probably spread a lot of smiles and happiness along the way. I hope others are inspired by your work and moved to continue it. Thank you for everything you've accomplished; rest in peace.

Haven't been thrilled with Nintendo for years now. That doesn't mean this news isn't a depressing shock. What a shame. Hope his family had more of an idea than the rest of the world about what was going on and it wasn't as much a blind-side for them. Deepest condolences.

I'm stunned like everyone else. He played a part in some of my favorite games and helped shape me into the video game fan I am today.
