Overview

Savage Reign (known in Japan as Fu'un Mokushiroku: Kakutou Sousei, loosely translated to "Fu'un Apocalypse: Grappling Genesis") is a 2D weapon-based fighting game developed and released by SNK for arcades (using Neo Geo MVS hardware) on April 25, 1995.
Set in a near-future 21st century in the fictional Jipang City, the game involves a fighting tournament known as the Battle of the Beast God, led by the mysterious King Lion. Each contestant fights for their own purpose, from proving the strength of the fighting style Fu'un-Ken (Hayate) to receiving prize money for their sick child (Gordon).
The game uses a dual-line system and control scheme similar to Real Bout Fatal Fury Special, with all characters equipping unique weapons (from boomerangs to powered discuses) for both close-ranged and long-ranged attacks. This system would later be revamped with the game's sequel, Kizuna Encounter: Super Tag Battle.
Savage Reign was later released for the Neo Geo AES platform on May 26, 1995 and ported to the Neo Geo CD on June 16, 1995. It was later released for the PlayStation 2 in Japan only (combined with the sequel to form the 2007 compilation Fu'un Super Combo) and was digitally re-released for the Wii (via Virtual Console) on May 31, 2011 in Japan only.
