    Sega CD

    Platform »

The Sega CD was one of the first CD-ROM based gaming consoles. The extra storage space this medium allowed gave rise to inclusion of full motion video, higher quality audio, and improved graphics in games.

    I'm thinking of buying a Sega-CD because I'm insane

So I recently ended up with a Mega Drive I, the classy mother you see below.

The Mega Drive 1, the model I own
The Mega Drive 1, the model I own

I presume it must have carried some long dormant parasite that has entered my brain because since playing around with it I now have an urge to hunt for a Sega-CD. This is proving tougher than I imagined due to the fact the console had so many models ie. Mega Drive I/Mega Drive II/Genesis. The same apparently applies to the Sega-CD which might (?) be called the Mega-CD in my region (Australia) and rather than looking like this

The Sega-CD mating with a Genesis
The Sega-CD mating with a Genesis

    It looks like this

    No Caption Provided

The end result of all these versions is I haven't the foggiest which of these insane pieces of machine would even work with my machine. I've seen images of the Sega-CD 1/Mega-CD with what LOOKS like the same model of what I own although it's labelled as Genesis on top (see here) and I've seen what looks like a Model I Mega-Drive on the Sega-CD (here called a Sega-CD 2).

In short HELP. Without more information I will be unable to misuse my money on ridiculous shit.

    You can use either.

Edit: You probably have to get the one's labeled mega-cd though cause of the PAL/NTSC format differences.

You'll be sorted with either model of the Mega CD so long as you have the same region. Also, make sure it's got the proper power supply with it. Both Mega Drive and the CD system need to be plugged in!

If you can avoid the crap interactive movie games, there's a handful of cool games. Sonic CD, Final Fight CD, The Terminator and heaps of souped up Amiga ports to name a few.

Pssst! Keep it to yourself, but it's also real easy to burn your own CDs, should some of the rare games cost too much.

My friend is a bit obsessed with Sega CD. His site, Sega CD Universe, has a crazy amount of information if you can manage past the 90's site design. He's fairly active on Twitter, so feel free to hit him up with questions.

Dude Sega CD has cool games on it!

Must get: Sonic CD, Final Fight CD, Snatcher, Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side, Ecco: Tides of Time (oh that music). As far as bad FMV games go (that I loved for some reason as a kid) Sewer Shark is worth seeing just to behold its glory.

As far as the hardware itself, I had the second picture you posted here so I can't really help. My half brother was awesome enough to give me his Genesis with Sega CD when I was a kid.

I'm going to use this as a platform to say that the Sega-CD sequel to Out of this World is fucking terrible.

I've still got one of the monstrous models like the second picture up there sitting in an attic or basement somewhere back home with Willy Beamish and the pack in CD that had the shooter with awesome music and Streets of Rage.

EDit: Sol-Feace! Holy shit this video brought back memories. That first stage music is rockin!

You can't own enough Sega consoles. What you're doing is far more sane than buying an antique armoire or some shit like that.

Sonic CD is the shit, so is Snatcher. Oh, and Lunar.

Now what you really need is a Sega 32X on top of that!
