    A Table-Top Veteran Re-emerges From the Darkness 1

Shadowrun seems like such a great idea on paper: Taking the evocative dystopian world of William Gibson's Neuromancer or Neal Stephenson's Snow Crash, with their paranoid hackers and corporate stiffs making their livings in a sprawling futuristic urban landscape seemingly trapped in permanent night, with only the intermittent neon sign, electronic billboard or computer monitor for illumination. Add to this melting pot of intrigue and danger a resurgence of magic in the world - an Ice Age-esque c...

A merely passable RPG, but one with a lot of future potential 2

Shadowrun Returns is probably most notable for being an early kickstarter success, riding on the coattails of Double Fine. While it didn’t reach the heights of Wasteland 2, Project Eternity and Torment, it still made a respectable 1.8 million, four times its initial goal. The pitch was to bring back Shadowrun, the “Cyberpunk with Elves” setting of a pen and paper game, as well as two well-regarded games for SNES and Genesis and make a RPG hearkening back to those two titles as well as the pen an...

    Short but sweet throwback. 0

I normally never write reviews but feel this title deserves it.Imagine a short 15hr turn based 2d isometric rpg from the 90s with some upgraded graphics done well. That's what Shadowrun Returns is in a nutshell. Short by any rpg standards the story however is well written. The lack of voice acting is a negative but can be forgiven due to the game's tiny budget. This does let the game have many more dialogue choices then if it were voiced though. Combat is solid though nothing special. It combin...

Shadowrun has returned and I just hope it stays. 0

The RadTurn based combat ala XCOM. Can’t get enough.Very story driven and for the most part it’s well written.Old School look and feel.Love the setting.Rad soundtrack! The BadOnly checkpoints. No hard saves.A little on the short side.I’m sadly rather inexperienced in the Shadowrun universe. It’s quite a pity seeing as though it’s a fusion of my two favorite genres - Cyberpunk and Fantasy. I’ve never been fortunate enough to play the Pen & Paper game on which it’s based. When I played the SNES...

A brand new story with gameplay improvements makes Dragonfall worth your time. 0

Despite its flaws, Shadowrun Returns was one of my favorite games last year. Taking place in the “sixth world”, its traditional D&D fantasy crossed with William Gibson cyberpunk setting, provides a unique flavor not normally seen in games. Throw in a murder mystery and an interested cast of characters and you have a story that feels tailor-made for my interests. I’m happy to report that its expansion, Shadowrun: Dragonfall, continues to show off more of its filthy magic-lai...

Though marginally superior to Dead Man's Switch, Dragonfall still feels like squandered potential. 0

Shadowrun Returns: Dragonfall is the new campaign from the original developers of Shadowrun Returns, Harebrained Schemes. The long-awaited "Berlin campaign" is a full expansion, providing a new 15+ hour campaign and various additions to the game's editor assets, and was released on Steam, GOG and the Humble Store for $15. It requires the original game to play. The campaign itself is a little better put-together than Dead Man's Switch, the campaign that originally came with Shadowrun Returns. Thou...

Shadowrun Returns manages to be a worthy follow up to the original titles, with a breath of fresh air for gaming 0

After spending an hour with Shadowrun Returns, two distinct emotions washed over me. The first, was relief. I was nervous that, as great as the game sounded, and as much as the developers had promised to channel the feeling of the original titles, they would not be able to produce a worthy successor 15 years later and on a different platform. My fears were immedately washed away as Shadowrun returns, looks, sounds, and plays like a Shadowrun game should, down to the very core. The second emotion...

Shadowrun Returns: Welcome back to the shadows chummer. 0

2011 comes to a close ringing in the new year and with it the beginning of the "Sixth Age". The world is re-awakened to magic and with it the old fairy tales of yore are reborn. Humanity splinters into meta-human races from a phenomenon called Unexplained Genetic Expression (UGE) leading to Dwarfs, Elves, Orcs and even Trolls. Magic and Shamanism is reborn, humanity now able to peer across the veil into the Astral Plane and the spirits within. However, what world already had didn't go away. Cyber...

Shadowrun Returns is a thoroughly enjoyable proof that Kickstarter works and reboots can be faithful 0

The idea of crowd sourcing the funding for games is still a fairly new concept that hasn't managed to escape the scepticism of some people just yet. Many of the games pitched on Kickstarter are often seen as little more than hopeful promises, but Shadowrun Returns is a recent title that can hopefully change that perception. Shadowrun Returns is also a shining example of how to successfully get an appropriate balance of classic and modern, it's a CRPG that reboots the classic cyberpunk-Tolkien th...

Shadowrun Returns: A return to form 0

Shadowrun returns is a world that is a mix of cyber punk and fantasy that is set in the world we live in today. The series started as a table top game and later was adapted to the world of computer entertainment. The first game came out in 1993 for the Super Nintendo Entertainment System an soon after it gather a cult following once it was ported to other systems. Now my first exposure to the series wasn't until 2007 with the multi-player focus FPS on the Xbox 360. I suppose that wasn't the bes...

Shadowrun Returns provides a dynamic and deep strategy game wrapped in a dark and engaging world. 0

Shadowrun Returns revisits the world of Shadowrun: a not-too-distant future Earth that has seen the return of magic, and with it the rise of meta-humans like elves, trolls and dwarves (presumably not the kind we have already), and apparently above-the-law corporations. In this world exists a class of people called Shadowrunners; part private detective, part mercenary, they're highly skilled, highly covert and used for all sorts of less-than-legal things by whomever can afford to hire them.In Sha...
