Shigeru Miyamoto is best known as the creator of many of Nintendo's most beloved characters and franchises including Mario, Donkey Kong, The Legend of Zelda, Star Fox, Pikmin, F-Zero, Wave Race, and Nintendogs. He was also the chief designer of Nintendo's Touch! Generation console series, which includes the Nintendo DS, Wii, and 3DS.
You can't blame the man for being cautious. He got burned by his "fans" when he tried something new with Picmin. Then he got burned again when he tried something new with Zelda Wind Waker. Both of which are excellent games (I can't stress how GOOD Wind Waker is). Both games did pretty good on the sales but the "fans" kept whining about how the graphics were "so-so" or how he needed to do more mature games.
The "fans" gave him the feeling they didn't want something new anymore.
That game is hardly worth considering an IP! Anyways, I don't Ozekis argument flies this time. Most people are begging for a new IP from the big N nowadays. Something that doesn't include Mario characters doing sports...

Yeah just because you failed to have a game that appeals to fans doesn't mean you give up.
