IM GONNA WATCH IT NOW, HOLD ME GUYS
EDIT:
jesus fuck this is Doi artwork. K-kaneko has to be doing the designs at least, right? The demons?
EDIT2: almost no new demons, and the new ones don't look very Kaneko. First person as well.
:/
Shin Megami Tensei IV
Game » consists of 6 releases. Released May 23, 2013
The fourth numbered entry in Atlus's RPG series of occult-themed tales in a post-apocalyptic world.
Second trailer released
Looks awesome. I was also surprised by no Kaneko, that's okay because I really like the P3-onwards artist as well.
@Hailinel: I really want to know what that one new demon design is, though I don't have time. I'm sure @Soren will figure it out before I can. If it's supposed to be a god of some sort, it really doesn't mesh with Kaneko's design aesthetics, but we'll see. So bummed that the battles look barely better than Strange Journey's. And I mean that purely in terms of the 2D sprite visuals. The 3D field graphics look fantastic, so it's kind of a letdown in that regard.

at least it wasn't Yasuda doing the designs, I guess.
But Yasuda's gravity defying tits are the best.

That's an awesome trailer, save for the part where the Nico Nico user comments scroll across the video. God, if Youtube did the same thing, there would be blood in the streets.
You can turn that off.
I didn't mind them reusing the demon models throughout the PS2 era but those sprites look alarmingly similar to the ones in Strange Journey. A weird contrast with the beautiful skill effects.
Cathedral of Shadows minister is looking mighty fine though.
@Eirikr: I'm racking my brain trying to find out what "Kougasapurou" (sic) is supposed to be, but I'm not coming up with much. It looks pretty terrible, I can tell you that!
also why does everyone have silly bangs
EDIT: Do not search google images for "Kougasapurou", it is literally nothing but cartoon porn.
This trailer has left me super-bummed. I guess it just shows me that I care much more for the mythological stuff in the games than the games themselves, because as a game this still looks brilliant.
Oh, that and those battle sprites. Press Turn System yes, but come on, Atlus! Maybe everything will be 3D rendered in a Vita port? Heh heh heh
I'm not too bummed about the sprites. Some of these designs make pretty terrible transitions to 3D (Dominion, Ongyo-Ki, anything with a fire/smoke/particle effect), and it'll at least make for snappier battles.
but nothing will fill the Kaneko shaped hole in my heart
At this point, I almost expect to just hear an announcement that Kaneko's leaving Atlus.
I'm not seeing the Persona-influence, though...so far, this seems like its staying true to SMT thematically. I'm not seeing Persona design elements. There's VA, yes, but I bet you will still kill all your friends in this game.I'm kinda feeling this is some Index business trying to Persona-up SMT to make it appeal to a broader audience.
I dunno, I just think they couldn't get Kaneko.
@mutha3: I'm talking about the IN YOUR FACE ANIME approach to the cutscenes, and the use of Doi instead of Kaneko.
One of Nocturne's greatest strengths was its cutscenes' brevity. They were succinct and well-directed and framed. These guys here are gonna talk and talk and talk and talk
Ah. I get ya. Now that I think about it -- you're right, that kinda sucks.
Nocturne's minimalist approach was one of the things I loved about it. They wouldn't call up MIYUKI SAWASHIRO and OTHER BIGSHOT JAPANESE VA WHOSE NAME I DON'T REMEMBER if this was going to follow in Nocturne's footstep.
I don't know. It's hard for me to get a good idea of what the cutscenes in the game are going to be like, aside from the obvious presence of voice acting. This doesn't really say anything regarding what the average length of a cutscene will be or the amount of dialogue that will be found throughout the game. It's certainly a change from Nocturne regardless, but I'm not worried about it yet.
As for the battles, I'm disappointed that the demons are sprites, as well, but at the same time, like @Soren noted, some of the designs don't really works as well in 3D space. I don't think it really detracts from the game, but still, the lack of Kaneko is a bummer.
@Eirikr:I was never under the impression that this game would look and feel like Nocturne beyond an expectation that Kaneko would be involved. I was wrong on that point, but beyond that I see nothing else particularly disappointing so far.

The third person dungeons are all it took to put this as my most anticipated game in the last three or four years.
