Sure, these days have almost every game sporting the newfangled 3D, but way back when, everyone had to live with plain old 2D. 2D, or two dimensions, limit the game to scrolling backgrounds, but some games even now make use of this basic concept.
These games were popular enough to be adapted for the theater.

Dialogue trees are a feature through which the player selects responses from a list of choices, eliciting reactions from NPCs and determining the path of the conversation and story.
Whether it's a section of a game, a mission prelude or just a scary premonition; dreams are a common occurrence within video games.
Carefully exploring a large, labyrinthine area full of enemies (i.e., a dungeon) in the hopes of finding treasure, leveling up, or completing a specific task. Having their roots in tabletop games, video game dungeon crawls are found almost exclusively in RPGs.
See? The exploiting, soulless people who run the video game industry DO care about their fans!

Flashbacks take a player into a flashback sequence. Often playable, but not always.
Women in Refrigerators (or "Fridging" for short) is an unfortunately popular plot device in storytelling where female characters are killed off or brutally harmed for the sole purpose of having an impact on a male character. The term was coined by comic book writer Gail Simone.

These games were popular enough to warrant an anime, whether it was a full television series, an OVA (original video animation), or a feature-length movie.
Health is a value that gauges how much damage players can take in a game before they die or pass out. Also known as life in some games. Health is usually represented by a bar or a percentage instead of an exact amount. Found in most non sport games
An attack that is fueled by the attacker's own health, causing it to decrease each time the attack is used.
Special or stronger units than standard ones, usually found in strategy games. This is not necessarily the same thing as a superhero or a game's protagonist.
