Well in the recent thread about the new Persona 4 album I read some posts that have led me to believe the main character dies or something. I'm gonna guess that signals the end of the game, is it still worth playing despite knowing that, worth seeing what else happens in the plot? I'm 25 hours into the PSP version but want to play the PS2 version with all the 3D stuff and anime cutscenes. Should I still power through and move onto The Answer after I finish or will knowing about the main characters fate ruin it all for me?
Shin Megami Tensei: Persona 3 FES
Game » consists of 7 releases. Released Apr 19, 2007
This expanded edition of Persona 3 adds additional content and a continuation of the original game's storyline.
Still worth playing? (spoilers)
Doesn't ruin it at all. The game is still very much worth playing. If you pay attention to the beginning, the game kind of tells you the ending right there. One of the main themes of the game is death. Besides, there are bigger twists in the game than the ending. Much bigger.
I can't speak for The Answer because I haven't played it. I can tell you that it is more of a straight up dungeon crawl than the main game. And it fleshes out the back stories of the surviving characters a bit more. It really focuses on Aigis, though. That is all I really know.
Oh, if you do start over on the PS2 version then you should know that you won't have the option to control your party members. The original game and FES only allow you to give direct commands to the MC; the AI controls the rest of your party.
Knowing the ending shouldn't change anything, really. I mean, does knowing that the Main Character in Persona 4 goes home by train at the end make the game worth playing any less? (man, that last sentence is terrible)
Also, the Answer's pretty bad to play through, unless you looove grinding. The best part of the Answer was some of the music.
But yeah, if you go back to the PS2 version, you're getting the charm of the 3D interaction and stuff/animated cutscenes at the expense of having to deal with some annoying mechanics (AI control, no square shortcuts, etc.)
I guess I already knew the MC was going to be dead or so because I saw screenshots of The Answer and didn't see him in it. Ah well!
I'm just going to put it on easy instead of rolling the dice with AI controlled party members. Persona 4 and the PSP version of 3 were stressful enough at times without AI control!

and here I was thinking it would be a worthwhile thing to play through!
If you're talking about The Answer...No, No, No, No, No, No.
It basically ruins the story of the main game and a couple of characters in the process!
Don't forget the grinding! Who would've thought that a couple months of downtime would revert your party to Level 25 or so?
I think portable is the better game personally. I don't have a problem with the AI team mates or anything, just the fact that portable has so much more stuff, and it's good stuff. I suggest finishing portable. I don't think your missing much with FES.

As long as you don't touch The Answer, yes.
DON'T EVER PLAY THE ANSWER, EVER.
This man speaks the truth. I, admittedly got scared off by how much grinding there was, but I have seen all the cutscenes on the youtube. And man... it's not good. In fact, one might go as far as to call it "Bad". There's a reason, beyond any sort of space limitations, why it was not included in P3P
The answer is very difficult. I never realised how much I took the compendium for granted until playing that. Before playing the answer I saw alot of people complain about Yukari and I never understood the hate. Until I played answer. If you're interested at all in answers storyline watch the cutscenes on Youtube, will save you ALOT of time. Although The answer does have a really good boss battle theme
I was actually considering playing FES again, was a fun game. The portable remake was okay.. but without the cutscenes and some other stuff I think FES is still the definitive version. The portable remake taking the battle features from 4 (direct character control) makes the game too easy because the game wasn't balanced around being able to do so.
SO AWESOME.
@Sooty: If you have access to P3 Portable, play that. Fes doesn't let you have direct control over the rest of your party, which can sometimes be an issue. If you want to play for The Answer, it is mostly grinding.
I knew about the fate of the MC going into this game for the first time but I still really enjoyed it. There was so much more to the game I didn't know that more than made up for what I knew about the MC. I finally got around to playing it around January this year, I've since bought Persona 4 (finished), DDS 1 & 2, Nocturne, Strange Journey, P3P and Persona 2. I almost gave up on ever playing this game cause of what I knew but I'm sure as hell glad I didn't, I'd recommend you keep at it.
I'd say some things about the game are better than Persona 4. Persona 3's theme of death and gloom seen throughout the game is a nice contrast to the sunny theme of friendship in 4. Also I think I may like the social links more in P3.
At times I feel like the characters were weeker, I found it hard to relate to Akihiko or Mitsuru. The whole cast of P4 was great.
Also the music may be better because the idea of japanese rap seems awesome. "DANCE WHILE I PUT YOU IN A TRANCE"
