Smokey is obv Smokey Robinson. Hes like the only black character on the show so far. Its def a tribute to him. I doubt it was a nod to Burt Reynolds.

I'm partway through Part 4 (Diamond is Unbreakable) thanks to this show. Jojo is great. Battle Tendency is amazing.

God I can't wait for more episodes of this great podcast!

As the series goes on the names get farther and farther away from true to the original Japanese when they reference rock groups or certain individuals. I've read that they were just not interested in even the possibility of legal battles with groups or individuals. Santana or Santa Ana IS the the strong winds of the south west, which makes WAY more sense.

I'm not sure if this gets better after part 4, as I haven't watched past there, but it gets a little ridiculous at times.

@infinite_zero00: It actively gets more ridiculous as it goes on. Stuff like a certain character in Part 5 very VERY clearly shouting for his Stand -Aerosmith- yet the subs say he's shouting "Li'l Bomber"

Fansubs are the only way to not get butchered subs when it come to JoJo, official subs change every musical reference at a point.

@infinite_zero00: When the Jojo manga was officially translated (starting with Part 3), Araki was the one to pick the renames to make them less copyright-infringing in english markets. So Captain Tennile became Captain Dragon, Vanilla Ice became Cool Ice. It worked because they were still loosely-referencing the original acts, but by part 5 it was entirely up to english translators, and the renames stopped being clever. Spicy Lady? Why not Spice Gal? Bleh

Enjoying the podcast so much though will say Tam & John, maybe ease up on spoilers not for just Jeff & Lucy but for anyone new who is watching this side by side with podcast.

Look forward to the next episode and seeing what Jeff and Lucy think after making their predictions.

On the Japanese dub on crunchyroll they straight up say "santana" but the subtitle text says santavira or whatever was.

Gotta be honest, i'm coming into this series as blind as Jeff. and some of the spoilers in this episode was a bit too much. i didn't need to know about the other Jojos, nor the Mayor thing, or jokes coming up in other episodes.
there's already so much to talk about in the current episodes, i think we can leave out what's to come and focus on what happened don't you think ?

Y’all said you were interested in audience questions for the future. But instead, I have a pitch for a segment. Ranking of Fighters has been sadly missing from the Giant Bomb repertoire for some time. I propose…The Official Jeff Jeff’s Bizarre Adventure Ranking of Jojo Hotness Index. A battle for who is the hottest character in Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure ranked by the podcast crew as they appear.

I'm following the podcast but not watching along so I don't remember if it's as explicit in the anime. I believe the concept of Space Ripper Stingy Eyes is supposed to be body fluid being projected out of the eyes via vampire physiology and then simultaneously flash freezing it the way we've seen Dio do it in the past. So they're not exactly lasers but more like frozen blood skewers, which is metal as fuck.

As a resident of Southern California the Santa Ana winds are indeed an ongoing concern particularly during brush fire season. I've lived here long enough now that I can tell when they're blowing through before actually seeing a weather report.

The depiction of the pillar man has always been an incredibly cool spin on the vampire mythos, which is an impressive thing to pull off in the late 80's when most mainstream media more or less had the general rules of vampirism set in stone. In JoJo you can see that they're depicted as absorptive heterotrophs. So when you consider that, a weakness to direct sunlight, and its almost spongy body composition the pillar man probably has more in common with fungus than it has with mammals despite their humanoid form. As someone who doesn't really like mushrooms I find that comparison even more upsetting.

And yeah Joseph rules, I loved him when I first read the comics and they really do him justice in animated form. Sugita Tomokazu does an amazing job voicing him in spite of the fact that he already plays one of the best main characters in all of anime in Gintama.

My brother and I are loving this so much😭

After this season of Jojo's watch maybe just 4 episodes of Jojo's per podcast episode? Just because there is a lot of Jojo's to get through while the later story arcs also progress much slower I think.

And definitely cover the manga whenever you do finally catch up with the anime!

But this is a blast!😂 Thank you!

Definitely not a reference to Smokey and the Bandit, which is titled "Trans Am 7000" in Japanese.

Smokey Brown is a dual reference to Smokey Robinson and James Brown.

"Donobang" is just an attempt to get around any sort of copyright or libel charges from the artist Donovan (probably overcautious, but having the name associated with an SS officer makes it a bit more dangerous than Speedwagon, for example). "Donobang" is a transliteration of the Japanese pronunciation of Donovan, "donoban." [there are no v or ng sounds in Japanese, so the "ban" could be transliterated into English as either "bang" or "van," or even "vang"]

Also, Crunchyroll/Netflix is probably the worst way of watching the show for many different reasons beyond sometimes awful copyright changes (inaccurate and character-losing subtitles, censorship, uncorrected animation, screen darkening for intense animation because of epilepsy concerns). I strongly recommend finding the Some-Stuffs (a fantastic fan translation team) versions, as they have far superior subtitles and use the Blu-Ray releases as their source, which are uncensored and have sometimes vastly improved animation quality over the rushed broadcast episodes.

I love the show, but I really think John should work on resisting the spoilers, even small ones. You never know what might resonate with someone, and I'd rather hear Lucy and Jeff's takes when they come to things themselves.

Ever since the difficulty localizing the jojo Vento aeuro ps2 game in the West, the anime and manga have been very careful about naming characters. The name is supposed to be santanna for sure but juuuuust to be sure they do a little swerve.

Some musical artists can be verrry litigious, so I don't blame them for changing some names around. It is super annoying though.

I think the character Smokie is named after the band Smokie, because that's just the reoccurring thing on the show.

I hope that once they fully cotton on to the fact that the subs butcher all the music references going forward they just acknowledge the change and then use the real names. Even with 0 Japanese the changes eventually become impossible to not notice (and hate).

Great podcast though. Really enjoying it.

"Creates two pressurized fluid jets from the eyes. Strong enough to cut cleanly through a stone column." from the jojo wiki, so you'd be right sans the freezing them!

I thought it'd be fun to watch along with them, but they keep revealing too much about the future of the series for my taste. I'm just going to have to come back to this when I've watched much more of the series.

@infinite_zero00: I was wanting to say this as well. The renaming has been pretty much standard for the Western translation ever since. I think it's actually kind of amusing because you get gems such as "Filthy Acts at a Reasonable Price." I also have fun watching the anime and seeing the rename on the subtitles, but then hearing the Japanese VO and trying to figure out what the reference actually is.

@kamasamak: As someone who's read/watched the entire series, they really haven't spoiled anything of any real importance. The fact that it has multiple protagonists is in the basic synopsis of a series that's 30+ years old. The future Jojos are right on the covers. The names of future characters don't mean much without context

Always anticipating the next pod! coming tomorrow as I'm writing this. Battle Tendency is a lot of fun and a peek at how wild Jojo's gonna get.

I also don't think they've spoiled much, once the surprise of transitioning to another JoJo is over with Phantom Blood the concept of seasonal JoJos is out of the bag, basically everything from there has been left in the dark as far as I can recall.

And if it hasn't they're not gonna remember by the time they get there.

@infinite_zero00: My personal favourite is that one of the later parts of the manga has"Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap" in it, translated as "Atrocious Acts At Affordable Prices". The translations definitely get more and more ridiculous as time goes on.

I'm late and they might have figured this out, but in the original Japanese his name is Santana. I don't think it was intended to be a musical reference since it's too on the nose for this point in the series, but the name was changed in the west to avoid any potential copyright issues. It becomes extremely common for the English names to be different from the original in this series, and some of them are just different musical references for some reason.
