Giant Bombcast 09-20-2011

Gears of War 3 is out today! So we talk about Gears of War 3. A lot. Turns out, we have no idea what a cog actually is! We're a little more knowledgable about TrackMania 2, Burnout CRASH!, Resident Evil 4, and Renegade Ops, though.

The Giant Bombcast is the world's most beloved video game podcast, and now it's available in video form.

Trackmania really does sound like the thing programmed by the guy on the bus who was pulled out of a mental institution during the 80s.

Glad someone corrected them, I was going slightly crazy when they discussed it :p

@DystopiaX: I find Gears of War 2 to be overwhelmingly better than the already-great Gears 1. Jury's still out on Gears 3 since I just got it today and am currently playing it. But I always enjoyed all the multiplayer I did in Gears 2 and never got into the MP in Gears 1. Especially Horde. And that campaign...freaking amazing. Almost Game of the Year material. That worm? Riding a brumak? The very end fizzles out too much, unfortunately, but it's just so great.

Sounds like DCO is adopting the exact same business model that Lord of the Rings Online spearheaded. Seems to be working pretty well for Turbine, but from what little I've seen, DCO doesn't have the same level of polish and content that LotRO has. Might be enough to keep it afloat for a while longer at least, who knows.

I think it's great that a (less jaded) crew member finally gives Lords of Shadow a chance. It's a fucking great game and even more of a Castlevania game than any of the post-SotN-DS-games (too much weird Anime shit). And Vinny just got to the good part (granted, the first two chapters are not that Castlevania-ish).

Their mindless hate for LoS has always bugged me, as did the poor QL with Ryan and Alex. They should just stop talking shit about a game they don't really know. Listening to Brad declaring the cross not being a whip was painful, it's obvious he doesn't know a thing about the game. It's a fucking chain whip that retracts into a cross. Every single move is a whip move. Sigh...

edit/disclaimer: of course I still love all of the GB guys %)

Yeah, Vinny seems to give games more of a chance and isn't bothered by whatever hiccups there might be in a game. The main GB editorial crew says they don't have time to get too deeply into a lot of games. While I understand that, I think ragging on games because they don't accommodate their busy schedule is unfair. Jeff most of all seems to let the minor things bother him the most and seems the least patient when it comes to tolerating game jank. The Killzone 3 intro thing, while bizarre, was not that bad and did not anger me as much as it did Jeff.

When one of them writes a game off, the others take that at face value. For the most part, that's what most people do when someone you believe tells you something is bad. I don't really have a problem with the reviewer playing and not liking the game, since knowing the reviewer and his tastes is most of the point behind GB. If one person's opinion then becomes the opinion of the others without them having played it critically (meaning without the pre-loaded view toward its quality) then conversation about the game, from all of them, becomes a meaningless bashfest. I'll echo the sentiment that its a good thing Vinny doesn't let them color his views of games (Demons' Souls also comes to mind here), wish they'd give him less shit when he disagrees with them though.

I completely agree and I haven't even played LoS and i think Vinny liking it is a great thing, i always thought that game looked pretty good. But I've always known my tastes, or at least a specific portion of them, are completely different from the theirs, So i tend not to let the negative comments conflict with my own views. That all said, i think Ryan is easily the most brazen and inflammatory, annoyingly so. He tends to bash a game the hardest, but that is Ryan's thing i guess.

Gamefly's availability went to shit? Huh, I hadn't noticed. Maybe I've just been lucky, but even with only a few games on my queue at any one time, I've not had to wait long often. I got Warhammer 40k the day after release, and that's not unusual for me. I did have to wait maybe a week for Deus Ex, but that's to be expected. It's why I got the two game subscription. I have one to play while I'm sending back the other and waiting for the next.

I like it. I get to play a lot more games, since I can put things on there I'd never buy myself. Sometimes I get a pleasant surprise. Also, I'm poor, and only can afford to buy say 5 games a year. I'll still buy the games I know I'm gonna want to spend a lot of time with (Skyrim, Dark Souls, etc.) but I can rent the games I think I'll like, but are more of a gamble (Rage) then opt to keep them or that I'd only play once through and aren't that long (Gears 3).

All in all, I play more games and save some money. Or at least don't spend more.

A cog is the tooth of a gear (or gear wheel / cog wheel). Two connected gear wheels is a transmission. A sprocket is a similar wheel that you connect to a chain instead of another gear.

I can't wait for Versus 13 to come out and have the Kingdom Hearts battle system. Not that there is anything wrong with that but Jeff won't like it and he's the only one slightly interested in the game.

Every time I hear people talk about Gears of War I'm like man I gotta play that! But then I remember I purchased the first one and got bored halfway through. I really want to like this game and universe but man did I not like the first one. Really kills my desire to try any of the others.

I don't think Gears gets enough credit for making likable characters. Sure the story telling is a little weak, but I would like to see more of Marcus or Carmine than most other shooters.

The bigger enemies in Gears 3 definitely feel like they go down a lot faster than in the previous games. On hardcore I was taking Grinders/Boomers/Butchers down in 3/4 of a clip where before it would take multiple clips to take them down. And on single player, the game feels way easier as getting downed means nothing since you have at least 3 AI partners to pick you back up.

Kudos to Vinny for sticking up for Lords of Shadow. I fucking loved that game, and I hate when people talk shit about it who have never played past the first hour of the game. I enjoyed LoS way more than GoW3, and the ending was the best video game ending of the past 10 years. All of the levels were beautiful to look at and varied wildly from one another, so you never got that "samey" feeling throughout. There were also plenty of quirky, weird sections such as the music box level, and the monster chess game. I hope Vinny plays it all the way through and schools the rest of the shit talkers on the bombcast.

Nice to hear Jeff like a game, and defend it. Forgot what that was like.

And as far as harder difficulties taking more ammo to kill enemies, isn't that the point? How Vinny would like a hardcore mode to work, vs. a normal mode, I'm not sure how he sees playing harder modes. Seems like he would be happier staying at normal, instead of complaining that hardcore takes longer to kill dudes?

Reading the first Gears of War novel makes the Gears of War 3 story more fulling. With that being said, some questions still weren't answered and I'm not to happy about it. But other than that I enjoyed it.

I loved all the trackmania talk, that thing is so fucking awesomely weird, Jeff should make a trackmania podcast I would listen to it :D. I almost died listening to Vinny explain that RTS game. Man I wanted to say something but I completely forgot, maybe I'll say it later.

edit: now I remember. Like @oginam said "When one of them writes a game off, the others take that at face value. For the most part, that's what most people do when someone you believe tells you something is bad". I don't like when they do that, they always pick on Castlevania Harmony of Despair saying it's a bad game but it's like most 2D castlevania games, I don't see what's so wrong with it. They should be better than that.

@Death_Burnout: Hit the nail on the head sir. Some games require a little more time to get in and really appreciate - unfortuntaly only a reviewer with a lot of time will be able to tell you that. But I know a guy who does... Vinny!
